Just considering a move!

Hi,

First of all what a great forum, the amount of information you can pick up is amazing. My other half and I are currently thinking about a life in Oz, never been though but it looks great.

We are both in good jobs here Chris (OH) is an aircraft electrician and I work as a PA/Office Administrator. Do you think this would this would be good for applying for a visa? I'm not sure what the best age to go is and when you are considered past it! I'm 31 and Chris is 24, no children at the moment but we are getting married in August so they may come along soon after. Are you better to emigrate (with regards to getting a visa) as a childless couple or with a baby/toddler

It all seems very confusing all the talk of different visa's, is there a good site where I can go for a very basic explanation of the different visa and the costs involved. If Chris was to go on a skilled visa, do I go on a spouse visa or some type of working one?

I think our greatest cost in emigrating would be our pets as we have 3 dogs, 2 cats and a parrot. Two of the dogs are elderly (over 10) and one has diabetes and is blind. So I think that may be a stumbling block for us.

However at the moment it's just an idea. So any advice will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Debbie & Chris

Hi Debbie and Chris

Welcome to the site, hopefully you'll get answers to all your questions.

A good starting point would be to look at www.immi.gov.au. This is the website for the department of immigration in Australia and should be able to help you loads.

Good luck - Joanne

First job is to check that one of you has a skill on the Skills list - use the link that the previous poster gave.

Next do a quick assessment to check your points. The right number of points (120 I do believe) could lead to a skilled independent visa. This is a golden ticket that will allow the person with the skills, their spouse / partner and any kids to go where they like in oz and do what they like.

I don't know very much about the other visas I'm afraid. I'm a teacher and got enough points so applied for a skilled independent 136 visa. My husband is named on the visa so it's just one application.

Hope this helps to start with and welcome to Poms. We are a friendly group and will try and help folks where we can.

Felicity
