Taking Pets to Oz

Hi All,

My husband and I are hoping to move out to Oz later this year. We had our medicals completed last week and are just waiting for our police check. My biggest worry is for our two golden retrievers "Maisie and Tilly". They will definitely come out with us but I am so concerned about them on the flight. Has any one taken their pets over? How did they cope with the flight? How where the conditions in quarantine and do you have any advise for us? I obviously want to ensure they are treated in the best way possible and with as little stress as possible

I'd really appreciate anyone’s experiences or advice. Many Thanks,
Sam

Hi Biscuit

We brought our pooch. As for how she coped on the flights I have no idea. We said bye to her at the Airpets kennels and that was the last we saw of her until we picked her up from Melbourne about 34 days later. It was a stressful time for us, I kept phoning the quarantine station to see how she was. As we are in Adelaide it was too far for us to visit, if you are close by you can arrange to go and see them. To be honest though I am glad that we didn't as I think it would have been harder for her to see us and then us not take her away with us. The ordeal has not affected her in anyway and she loves it here and we are so glad that we brought her.

We brought our 15 year old cat (whose now 16), she seems to have coped well, a little confused keep moving about though, she's not been off her food or anything and has settled in without problem. Certainly, if you're thinking of coming to Perth, Byford Quarantine isn't very big and you do need to book early (we had to book 4 months in advance), you can visit your pets too whilst they're in quarantine. We used Pets on the Move

OH is desperate for a dog so are kids actually, Me i say "wait til we get there".
He wants a bull mastiff, and he is willing to sell his motorbike to get one. (could mean a holiday for me with the rest of the cash)
So it is with gritted teeth i ask how much is it to take your dogs out there?

Hi Leanne,

I think the average cost to take a dog is around £3000...so if you can make them wait for the dog I would!!

pets

We bought two dogs. (Cocker and a Westie) I think I was more stressed than them!! I could not go to Heathrow and see them put in their crates!! and did not sleep the night they were travelling!! But they arrived safe and sound in Melbourne and I rang the minute they arrived in Quarantine to check they were Ok. The people there were great!!(Sure they are uysed to paranoid dog owners contacting them! We arrived four days later. It cost around 3.500 pounds for both of them includes...... vets bills prior to leaving, wooden crates, flight and quarantine in Melbourne. They were in quarantine for 30 days, we did visit twice in the first two weeks, but our cocker spaniel howled when we left which really upset me. So we didnt visit again until we could take them home. They have settled well although the cocker is really very clingy now! Could not of come to Oz without them.

My boyfriend and I brought our two Bull Matiffs over from Oxford. We employed a company called airpets to come take them from our house and stay over night at there kennels at Heathrow. Then fly out here. They were fine, we arrived a day before them and I was on the phone as soon as I thought they had landed and got to the quarentine. They are nice people there and they look after them. Dont worry about them, easier said then done I know but you can visit them in quarentine twice a week.

Dog transfer

did any of you investigate the possibility to make your own pet transfer arrangements rather than through an agency? we are currently looking into it but would like to know if anyone else has actually done it themselves. we have a labrador.
