WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
My partner is a Plasterer who runs his own business here making not a bad living. We have been granted out visas but are wondering how much Plasterers earn in Oz.
I have been to Oz six times now and have lived in Melbourne where most of my friends are and that is where my partner wants to go mainly because he thinks he could not cope with the heat in Queensland which is where I would love to go. Love the thought of heat all year and a pool etc. I have two kids of seven and two who also would love Queensland so we are in a bit of a quandry. Lots of heated discussions at the moment.
Planning to go in about a year and a half and saving like crazy. Can anyone help with some good advice.

Many thanks for your reply. I am new to this website and am loving it.
We did visit Oz last year when we had decided we would like to live on the central coast where my step sister lives but when we got there were very unimpressed by the houses etc. Our next stop was Canberra then Adelaide and then Melbourne. We stayed with friends in Melbourne in a place called Mill Park Lakes which is a brand new estate and the houses are amazing and we decided we would live there but on our return I have had a chance to think about things and would really love to live in Queensland and have a house with a pool etc. Melbourne weather is too much like Scottish weather and thats what I want away from !!!!
Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to visit Queensland and I wish now that I did because everyone says it is amazing there. I have visited Cairns and the Whitsundays but never the Sunshine or Gold Coast
I will keep working on my other half as I think we would get used to the heat eventually.
Can you advise on where to look at for houses etc.

Hiya
We choose here for exact same reasons you give ,,get working on that hubby ,you wont regret it,,where to look depends on what you want in a house,,there are lots of new land estates offering different things ,i'd have a chat with hubby and decide on afew issues such as ,,how much you have to spend?? how far from the coast ?? how far from city or workplace are you willing to commute?? do you want a low maintence yard or a larger acerage plot with room to move?? you dont say what age your children are but would you need ,child care? or primary? or high? schools?? when you know what your looking for its much easier to eliminate areas but still leaves tough decisions. We choose this estate as it is a nice semi rural area with larger acerage plots ,has its own schools and childcare and is one of few to have its own shops, all fitted our shortlist, let us know what you fancy and you should get plenty of recomendations on here ,
Take care

Thanks again for your advice it really is great to talk to someone who was in the same boat as us.
We are looking for a new or fairly new house in one of these new estates with a good bit of land (not too big though - maybe big enough for a pool etc) My kids are 7 and 2½ so I would be looking for a good school and child care as I hope to work part time. We would also like to be close to the coast and don't want too far to have to commute to work - am I asking too much here? Our budget would be around $350,000 - $400,000
Can you give me the name of a few suburbs which might fit the above bill.

not sure about knowledgeable???? but you learn quick over here, many people move towards the sunshine coast and im not too clued up on this area but i know there is land estates ,maybe a search on www.realestate.com.au and click on new land release at the top,,im a south Brissy girl and we love it here ,we are 35min from surfers paradise beaches etc ,the estate has its own child care, school and shops and is a mix of smaller plots and larger acerage, your budget will get you a nice house in most areas,a few of the popular estates other than Flagstone ,,,are,,Springfield lakes (own shops, school &uni but no acerage),Teviot Downs and Glenlogan lakes( both acerage & 5/10min to shops),Forest lakes (not sure on schools& shops but no acerage),,you really will be spoilt for choice,if you have a look in the Queensland section of the board i have posted quite a few messages on estates and areas that you may find intesting,,good luck its mind blowing

Cal, I just LOVE the Gold Coast so much (even Surfers)! Our family are in Clear Island Waters and I just go all squishy inside when I think about it. (Sorry over tired on late feed duty tonight)
