Hi,
I am a teacher who has worked in both the UK and now in Oz. Let me just say that, for all its faults, Australia has a very good education system. About a third of Aussie kids are educated in a private school; about twenty percent by Catholic Education, which is the second largest educational body in every state of Oz after the State Education authority.
Private schools in Oz get most of their funding from the Federal Government which makes them extremely affordable. I am working in a really nice Catholic school in Far North Queensland where the fees are $1600 per year!!! The value for money is just unbelievable.
In the cities however, you would be looking at paying up to $15000 p. a. for a top of the line school. This still compares very well with the UK where a private school could cost up to $50000 or more.
State schools still compare very well with UK schools. While their profiles are normally not as great as their private counterparts in Oz, the classes are fairly orderly and there is still some respect for teachers and classmates. State schools in some areas however could be an extremely poor choice for most kids.
You should note that Australia does not have a Grammar School system as does the UK. There is also very little streaming in the classes. This is actually a great beauty of our system as there are not "ghettoised" classrooms resultant of exessive streaming.
Oz is definitely a very good choice insofar as high school education goes.
Peter
