Hi Tony

I don't have any children so it would be stupid for me to try to comment about schools.

Whereabouts in Oz are you planning on moving to? That might be a relevant factor in what parents who are already in Oz can tell you about the schools.

Also, have you tried reading some of the threads in the Education section of the forum? That might help you to get some ideas too.

Cheers

Gill

Private v state sector schooling

Hi,

I am a teacher who has worked in both the UK and now in Oz. Let me just say that, for all its faults, Australia has a very good education system. About a third of Aussie kids are educated in a private school; about twenty percent by Catholic Education, which is the second largest educational body in every state of Oz after the State Education authority.

Private schools in Oz get most of their funding from the Federal Government which makes them extremely affordable. I am working in a really nice Catholic school in Far North Queensland where the fees are $1600 per year!!! The value for money is just unbelievable.

In the cities however, you would be looking at paying up to $15000 p. a. for a top of the line school. This still compares very well with the UK where a private school could cost up to $50000 or more.

State schools still compare very well with UK schools. While their profiles are normally not as great as their private counterparts in Oz, the classes are fairly orderly and there is still some respect for teachers and classmates. State schools in some areas however could be an extremely poor choice for most kids.

You should note that Australia does not have a Grammar School system as does the UK. There is also very little streaming in the classes. This is actually a great beauty of our system as there are not "ghettoised" classrooms resultant of exessive streaming.

Oz is definitely a very good choice insofar as high school education goes.

Peter

We took our children out of the private school system in U.K. and put them into State schools here. We have been delighted with our choices but have been told several times over that we have been very fortunate to have got the children into the shools that they now go to..

The quality of education on offer here is very good (IMO) and we are, for the first time in our lives, 100% satisfied with the education our children are receiving. We have had to accept some major changes but the outcome is so far good.

A teacher from Yorkshire started to teach at my daughter's school last week and he thinks he has died and arrived in Heaven.. He cannot believe the difference in the behaviour of the children and said he is enjoying teaching for the first time! I don't know where exactly he taught or what kind of school he taught at but I know he would not go back to the U.K. to teach in a hurry!

I'll ask him again in 6 months time and see if he still thinks the same!

Hi Krista

Could I be really cheeky and ask which school you send your children to. We are currently in the process of transferring to the Australian Navy and my hubby is going to Melbourne for 12 months. We have 2 boys aged 15 and 11 (12 in May) and although I spend ages on the internet looking as websites, I would like to hear from people who have got children going to state schools (would like to go private but hubby says no). At the moment they attend a really awful secondary school because of catchment areas so I really don't want them ending up in another poor performing school. Thanks for any help you or anyone else can give a worried mum.

Nicky

Hi Nicky - we are going with the ADF to Melbourne in October. Well its not actually in Melbourne but in Sale (nice Qs though). My kids are 14, 12 and 7 - will be 8 by then..... We are only going to be down there for about 12 months too before we are posted onwards. Drop me a line to compare if you want. We have got the children into a reasonably fair fee paying Catholic School (whish seems very very good) - even though we're not Catholic. They have been fab and are working out my sons "GCSE options" wonderfully - they could not have been better..... We are really very happy with the whole process - have you soken with the REDLO?

Drop me a line.. Sarah
