WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
My husband has just had his final interview for a transfer to WA police and we are in for a nail biting weekend as he doesn't find out until Monday morning whether we will be in or out and as i can think of nothing else, thought I would make some sort of preparation.
I was wondering if there was a sort of picture book about Australia that kids of preschool age can use to help to explain to them what is going to happen (hopefully).
I have looked at the usual sites and can't find anything like this.
Anyone got any ideas other than constant talk of sandcastles and seaside which after a whole won;t appease him anymore when all he talks about are dinosaurs and steam trains. Speaking of which are there any steam train museums or dinosaur museums in Perth?????
Hi there we are hoping to move to oz too and we have a 4 year old too. We have been showing her all the programs on the telly we can about it and lex has really enjoyed it and wants to go. it might work for you too. good luck Gav
There's a fabulous playpark within Kings Park in Perth based around the theme of dinosaurs. We travelled last year with 5 kids (not all ours) and they all loved it. Huge concrete dinosaurs to climb on, castles, forts, great adventure playground all round. Saying that, we may now go to live in Brisbane!!! Hope that's got some great parks too as there were loads in WA.
Thanks for that. Reckon it'll take some time with the little guy, though they are so simple at times that the promise of seeing the dinos at Kings Park should probably do it!
Just did a search on Kings Park. It looks fantastic, are all parks as nice and well kept as this?
Can't wait to go....still waiting for the results.
Hi
Obsorne Books do a Moving abroad book but not specific to OZ. I have a 6 year and although it wont be for a bout 18 months that we go (if we can just at start.). We have told him and all he keeps saying is There are Spiders in Australia that kill you you know!!!! I knew we shouldnt of bought that Question and Answer book at Xmas.
You've got a smart little boy there. I'd be taking his advice and steering well clear. Watched a programme last night on the most poisonous place on Earth, guess who got first place???????

There cant be anyone more scared of creepy crawlies than me and i must admit since being here i have got better ,im now brave enough to squash anything with more legs than me !!! thank my lucky stars i havnt come across any snakes any snakes yet but i know its got to happen to one day,its just common sense ,its true the crawleys will try n run from you and dont go into attack mode,,one little piece of advice i have is to switch the light on when using the loo at night ,,i nearly jumped through the roof two nights ago to find Mr Freddy frog sat on my loo seat ,he went straight back the way he came ,,down the pan !!!!

I am completely terrified of spiders. I have no idea how i will be with snakes because I've never had one in my house (!) but I am really scared that my fear will start to take over and end in complete paranoia over everything. I have thought about hypotherapy as i am determined that this won't spoil our dream of living in Australia.
How often do you see huntsmen? Stupidly I am more concerned with their size than i am about how poisionous they are. Especially if they jump like I have heard they do out there (OMG!).
Steve Parish publishes some fantastic books for kids (and adults). My kids loved reading them before we came over. Also since we have been in Australia we have sent some back for our Nephews.
He has a website, his books cover a lot of subjects and he does various 'sticker' books which the younger ones like.

we get a few small huntsman but the only scarey HUGE one i have seen was in the back when we took a big tree down ,i got about a foot away and just couldnt go nearer, none have jumped at me so thats a blessing in disguise, most houses are sprayed so you tend not to get many ,,believe the thought of them is worse than actually seeing them,,,
