Do different states have different driving licence criteria?

friends in perth said it takes 2 yrs to pass the driving test,as you have to do so many hrs driving before taking test, then you have a yrs probation (which has limitations in that time) before you get a full licence.

I don't know about the other states but in Queensland you no longer have to take a test (only changed in the last few months). You just turn up with your UK license and various i.d. - easy.

I read somewhere about if you havent been passed your driving test in the uk for more than i think it is 5 years you have to resit it in oz when you get there. Not 100% but definately read something somewhere.
