Cairns, what is it really like, anyone moved there???

My husband has a job offer in Cairns and everyone who lives there is being so much more helpful that the contacts I had in Brisbane...We fancied going somewhere other than the norm, Brisbane, Sydney....Any advice, comments would be fab...

It's not so much the heat. Its the humidity. The high relative humidity makes it feel very uncomfortable for many people. Some people cope better than others.
Let me give you a quick example. 50 degrees @ 50% humidity feels relatively comfortable & you can work in such conditions quite easily provided your not exerting too much (& not in for too long), by contrast 35 degrees @ >98% humidity feels like hell but the actual moisture in air is pretty much the same (approx 40gms/cubic metre - for the sceptics). Its just because the closer you get to 100% humidity the less your perspiration works effectively to cool you & you stay wet & uncomfortable.
Some people prefer tropical humidity over dry desert heat.
I recommend you test your bodies response to high humidity.

Hi I'm new to the site and this is my first post, so be gentle LOL!!

Is it true that they get alot of Tropical Cyclones and Typhoons up that way?? I think that would be more of my concern and then the heat?

I emigrated to cairns 4 years ago and love it!! wouldn't move anywhere else. its only stinking hot for a couple of months of the year, but thats why we have air conditioning. if you get the chance to move here, take it.

Another note, it never gets past 35 degrees here so 50 is a bit wide of the mark.

Yes, it was just an example to demonstate the importance of relative humidity over temp.

The reason I gave that particular example is I've just been working in those two environs at work & the 35 @ 98% was absolute hell to work in but the 50 @ 50% was surprisingly easy?

Out of curiosity (I've never lived that far north) what would be the worst conditions you can expect?

Average temps

FNQ would never get much hotter than 35C. It is often cooler than souther Qld which was getting temps closer to 40C earlier on this week. This is because of the high level of humidity: it actually keeps the temp lower than dry parts of the state.

Yes we do get cyclones. There was a category 5 here last year ("Larry") that wrecked most of the Johnstone Shire with wind gusts of over 280kph! Fortunately, one of that magnitude only comes along every 20 years or so.
