termites

i am very keen to give the ozzie lifestyle a go for the sake of our 4 kids but hubby not so keen to leave the greenery of scotland. i have argued my way out of avoiding spiders snakes ,bush fires, drought, and now he has hit me with more amunition - termites. looked on a web site and apparently as many as up to 1 in 3 homes can be :o affected in oz. no insurance covers them and they can literally eat the home from under yr feet. i realise you can get sprays and chemical treatments etc but with some rogue traders out there wonder is it really common to hear of extensive termite damage. any longtermers out there who can shed any light on this?? i'm fighting a losing battle with hubby!!! thanks a lot

Hiya this too was one of worrys but after being here a few month it hasnt stopped us buying a wooden framed house.Not all termites will eat your house most are happy with the trees.Property sales here require a pest inspection to check for termites and all houses are treated ,i havnt met anyone yet who has had termites or who wouldnt buy a wood frame house,its like the snakes and spiders ,you have to know about them but not necessarily see them.
Do you know Oz is very green too ,i was amazed the first time i came how green certain areas are. Dont worry ,youll be fine
