Hi
Adelaide is a lovely city, one of my favourites. It's not like the others, as it is very small and compact. Rundall mall is a great place to shop, you can get Marks and Spencer stuff and some Boots No.7 etc.
As with all of Australia, the suburbs stretch for ever, outside of the actual CBD. My husband's Auntie lives in Adelaide but she is an hour's drive away from the actual CBD ( city centre ). Places to definitely avoid are: Salisbury, Smithfields and Elizabeth, although it is an English settlement ( a lot of the 50's 10 pounders came out to this area ).
Adelaide isn't too close to the beach, although there is Glenelg, but that's small and like a resort, rather than a leisure beach for swimming and surfing. If you go further south to places like Aldinga and Morphettvale and Christie's the beaches are much more user friendly.
As regards leaving family, the way we look at it is they're only a text message/call/email away. Although, if you are emotionally/geographically close to your family then that is not much help........ Anyway, good luck and write back if you need any more advice.
Cheers
