Confused poms

I'm a Civil Engineer with a HNC but apparently that is not recognised, so me, my wife and family have been told that to get into Oz one of us has to enrol on a college course for 2 years to be accepted out there. Has anyone else had to to this, or can anyone give us any advice? We want to go to Perth preferably. We are going out there in two weeks time to have a look around and meet some friends and hopefully get a sponsorship. We are going to use an agency and not tackle the forms ourselves. Not really sure how to proceed and just want as much advice as possible if anyone can help!

Hi, it sounds like you are talking about a student visa. Once you have completed a two year cricos approved course (probably at a tafe college in your case) you can apply for PR using the new aussie qualification effectively in lieu of experience. You will however have to look at the Skills assessment panel for civil engineers as they are the ones who will give a yes or no to your PR application and they may require a degree and/or work experience gained whilst you study. All this info should be easily found on the net. Hope this helps. By the way I have just applied to an Oz uni as a mature student as I am in a similar position and have to get the qualification to get PR. Be warned - it is not cheap. My course fees and 3 years living expenses whilst I complete my degree are costing in the region of £50000!!!! You have to be sure, but I believe its worth it. Jason

thanks guys. Thanks for the responses. We know its what we want, just seems to be hard gathering the right info. We are using an agent to do all the donkey work but even they are very vahg in what they will tell you. I am meeting some people out in Perth and i am hoping to get a sponsership but not sure how that works. Do you have any ideas? Is this an easier route to take or just as hard.

I'd do a bit more digging if I was you. Start with Engineers Australia www.engineersaustralia.org.au who do the skills assessment. The do have a category for Engineering Associates, who have 2 years post school qualifications. According to this you need to see if your course is recognised by the sydney accord and you can do this by checking with the Engineering Council UK www.engc.org.uk. Your nominated occupation would be Civil Engineer Associate which gives you 40 points. Is this why you need extra points?

Good luck and shop around for a good migration agent to see what different advice you get.
