Hi. 1st Post to ask some questions.

Hi everybody.

My names Dan, I'm married with 2 children, a daughter of 16 and a son of 12. My sisters living in Brisbane after moving there about 6 months ago. Course everything since then has been that Oz is great and get your butt out here! :D

I'm a carpenter by trade but have been involved with building preservation, pest control and insect infestation as a surveyor for a large national company for the last 20 odd years. My wife is a teaching assistant in a primary school for special needs children.

All of the work that the company I work for, is building related, although I don't directly do any carpentry work anymore. (Incidentally, I'm 43 and the wifes 42..although she insists shes only 26 :D )

My question at the end of all that, is do you think that I'm too old or that the points system won't work for me? As you can imagine, there doesn't seem to be a box to place me in now that I don't actively do any carpentry work.

Sorry it a bit long winded everyone, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Dan

Hi and welcome,

I am 43 and have just lodged my main application so I obviously dont think that the age is a problem.
I would contact any or perhaps a couple of the many migration specialists and see what they say and perhaps use them to get you through the tra process and if you can get past that then you have a good chance of getting a visa.

Best of luck.

Are you thinking of Brisbane to its a great place especially for tradesman I hear there is masses of planned construction in qld and theres going to be a shortage of skilled labour.

Hi Kaye,

I'm new to the site and I'm sorry to but in, I am from Newcastle and our application was lodged mid-Nov. We were thinking about moving to Brisbane or Melbourne. My OH is a joiner and we were unsure where he would have a better chance of employment. You said that lots of construction is planned in Queensland, do you know if that would be housing or larger scale construction? We are hoping to visit in May/June and I can't wait. My husband has relatives in Tasmainia but we have decided that we don't want to be there.

When did you lodge your application and when do you plan on leaving lovely Newcastle!!

Hi Kaye, another female who is younger than her years!!!!

Thanks for the reply, yep we fancy Brisbane, not only because of the fact that my sis is there but I love the sound of the weather. She rents at the moment on Sovereign Island but is moving to another area not far away where she'll be on the 8th fairway of a golf course! That meets with my Bro in laws approval seeing as he's a golf addict :? but the sort of property available to them there, compared to here in 'sunny Wales', is staggering. She lived in Sydney 20 years ago when she visited on a years working permit and has always craved to go back to Oz someday. She's 46 now, retired and has already stated that the only time she'd come back here is if she starts to take Australian live for granted and needs a shock to come back to her senses!

I've written to Rentokil in Brisbane who carry out the same sort of work that I do over here (Pest Control etc) but obviously, most of the British pests are nothing like the pests that Australia have, so have decided to take some qualifications for Termite control to see if that acts as a bit of a sweetner. Failing that, I guess I'll have to look around a bit for some other work to go along side my wifes' occupation to see if we get in that way. I don't mind getting back into the Carpentry, but i'm not too sure how the Aussies will take to someone who hasn't really been involved in a 'hands on' way for a few years now. The alternative would be to move to Melbourne where I have a really close friend who has his own building company and is prepared to sponsor me as a chippy, so it may be feasible to do that if the Brisbane way looks like a no go route.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Regards
Dan

Hi Lindsay and Scott
Not another looking to leave Newcastle we are in Heaton where are you. The kind of work I heard was planned was big industrial type. My OH is in mechanical services and air conditioning. Thats not to see that there is no domestic work but I was not searching for that so am unsure. The great news for us is that they are planning 3 major hospitals in SE Qld costing $1 billion dollars each that is my OH bread and butter working on this type of build. But there is lots more planned according to a local paper ''Courier mail'' in Brisbane.

WE have chose Brisbane because of the weather mainly hot weather means air conditioning and ventilation good for jobs etc.

I dont know anything about Melbourne so cant help but we have considered Tasmania it appeals to me although colder OH also does industrial heating so again we are told work not a problem. I would imagine as a joiner work situation would be ok anywhere. The thing that puts me of Melbourne is I am led to believe the weather can be to changeable according to people on forums anyway.

Whereabouts are you going for your visit are you going to travel around or just go to one place. We took our two youngest on the trip with us we had a great time in Brisbane thoroughly recommend it. Especially if you make the effort to travel upto the sunshine coast about an hour from Brisbane.

Anyway have a great time on your trip and hope your application goes well
Kaye :)

Hi Kaye,

Thank you for your reply, we are in Cramlington and decided last year that we wanted to move to Australia. The info about the construction work planned is very useful as my OH has always worked on builds such as hospitals, shopping centres and such like. The only thing that bothers him about Brisbane is working out doors in the heat!!

We are planning on taking our kid's with us for our visit, flying to Melbourne, spending a week there, then get internal flights to Brisbane. Probably won't go anywhere else, think it will be 2 much for the kids. The main reason for our visit will be to try and make contacts with possible employers, although we still want to make if fun for the kids.

We thought about Tasmania as there is meant to be plenty of work in Construction, but we really wanted to be on the mainland.

Hope your visa is through soon, you'll have to let me know where you decide to go.

Thanks again for the info, Lindsay&Scott x x

Lindsay & Scott,
Hi , its my first time on here even though i've been hooked on it since i found this site over the xmas hols . I thought i had to join when i seen you were from Cramlington . We are from there as well . Our application was acknowledged on 1st August but we've had no word as yet cos they are only up to applications received as of May 9th . We are looking to move to south Qld or North NSW , wherever the work is. My OH also works outside + is also worried about the conditions.
Joanne x
