where to move??

My wife and myself are just about to put in our application, (skilled independent, i'm a boilermaker), we don't have to get my skills assessed because i worked in oz in the early ninties and got a trade cert,(i have checked up on this), so how long will it take?. Also regarding house prices we should have about £100,000 to bring with us, what sort of mortgage would we expect to have?. we are thinking of moving to perth, i have friends and family there, i have heard there is plaenty of work of all descriptions. i also have family in the wollongong area, the houses are cheaper there, is there as much work??. which would be the best move perth or wollongong??.

Hi johnd
I've heard thats there loads of work in perth, for £100.000k you should get your self a nice place but all depends on what you want and where you want to live!.
I know you get more for your money south of the of perth so if you mind driving about to get to work it might be worth to take a look at south of perth. Some poeple say north is better but you don't as much for your money.
Have you looked a www.realestate.com.au
Hopes this helps..

Gday Johnd, I live in the Gong, been here for 36 years, ex Sheffield lad,
I think the Gong has had it's day as far as work is concerned, another 200 steelworkers to loose their jobs soon, it was on our news last night.
I've been to Perth many times & wish I had gone there in the first place, beautiful & clean, not sure on the house prices though, but they are far cheaper than NSW, so is car rego etc.
My son lived around Quinns Rock area which is north of perth, 30 mins from the city by expressway & the train service was fantastic from there too, The Wollongong area is really beautiful, but as I'm retired, I don't have to worry about work or finding a job.
Wollongong has the highest unemployment in NSW, probably Australia, I wasn't listening to the news properly.
Skippy.

Skippy, you are right about the unemployment rate in Wollongong.

Unemployment Rates as at March quarter 2006.

Wollongong : 8.2 %
Sydney : 4.7 %
Perth : 4.0 %
Brisbane : 4.7 %
Melbourne : 5.0 %
Adelaide : 5.7 %

Australia : 4.9 %

SE Brisbane : 3.9 %
(I had to check my area :) )

May be a daft question? Why do they want so many Migrants if they have these unemployment issues? Are they not retraining folks?

Sorry if a daft question.

Many of these "unemployed" do not actually want to work.

There was a trial done recently, where people claiming benefit were offered work outside there normal area, but none took up the offer.

A good example of this has been Byron Bay; the area had little work, and many people were moving there, to ensure that they could not get work, and could therefore claim the un-employment benefit easily. The beaches are pretty good there ;)

Just checked the unemployment rate there now, and that area is now 8.7%.

There does seem to be work for those who want it, and are prepared to work. However, migrants rarely get the best rate until they have settled in a bit and proved themselves. Employers like to know that the new migrant will settle first, and not move on again.

However, a lot of those "unemployed" actually want those elusive jobs that offer good pay for no work :D

I just found these statistics on a UK county government website:
Economically inactive 153,600
Wanting a job 39,300 (25.6%)
Not wanting a job 114,300 (74.4%)

Assuming people are much the same the world over, 74% of the unemployed not actually wanting to work would seem about right to me ;)

thanks for the info skippy. your right about the wollongong area being beautiful. i lived in dapto,(koonawarra), in the early ninties with my aunt and uncle. i also played rugby for the wollongong waratahs,(still got my shirt), i worked on shut downs at the bhp port kembla steel plant,(is it still going?), and i would prefer the wollongong area for its climate and countryside etc. i also stayed in perth for a few months and it would be my second choice, however if thats where the work is then that is where we will go. my friends in perth say that the house prices are high but they are in the uk!. i still have relatives in the wollongong area, i know one of my cousins,(a scaffolder), lives in the albion park area.

regards,
john d

Johnd, I live in Albion Park, moved here when it was like a village, now it's getting all built up as the people from Sydney are buying in this area, it's much cheaper than the Sydney suburbs & the environment is better.
It's surprising how many people now live in the Gong, but work in the Sydney area, the steelworks is still there at Port Kembla but only has a workforce of about 25% of what it had when I came in 1970 & the coalminers are mostly on contract these days, I think the majority of the unemployed choose to stay like that, as was said by ABCdiamond.
This is all a personal choice thing, a friend of mine has just returned to this area from Perth, he reckons it's getting too expensive over there so who knows what is right or wrong untill you try it, he also is retired, so the unemployment doesn't apply to him either, all I can tell you is that NSW is the most expensive state to live in.
I have visited Perth & Brisbane many times as our son has lived in both areas, the house prices were three quarters of the price in those places to what we pay here for similar housing, although I have heard that prices are on the increase as more & more people are moving to these areas for a better lifestyle ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????
