Question Place in Melbourne

Hi all,

Just got our visa and the next level of stress comes in. We are looking to move to Melbourne by the 15th of October perhaps sooner. We have been to Sydney, Queensland but never to Melbourne.
We are certainly hoping to get an idea where is the best place to live in Melbourne, looking to rent a house (at least 3 BR) for maybe 3-6 months at the most.
I worked in the automotive industry and my OH worked as a Research Associate/ Biotechnology. We have 3 children ages 18,16 and 15 and they're all going to school.

Any recommendations, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
JP

Hi JP

Melbourne is huge, we live North East in Warrandyte ,there are lots of nice areas around, Eltham, Park Orchards,Doncaster,Donvale, Templestowe. All easy to get into the city by train/bus. The train from Eltham is 40 minutes bus from Warrandyte about 1.5hrs.

If you want to look outside of Melbourne, lots of PIO's live in Geelong and the Mornington Penninsula areas. Geelong is an hour by train to the City not sure from Mornington but by car it's over an hour.
Depends how close you want to be to the sea I guess. We are 45 minutes which suits us just great and an hour and 20 to the nearest ski resort (cross country not downhill). Some people like to live right on the beach but we were given some good advice by another PIO person last year in that you may be better "commuting" to the beach rather than a long daily commute to work. Works for us others wouldn't dream of being so far away.

Moving to Melbourne has a relocation business and is a member on here I am sure she will give you some advice. PM her.

best of luck, Victoria is a fantastic place to live.

Michelle

What area are you intending to work?
How much time do you wish to spend getting to and from work?
Older areas with older housing
New Estates.
Do you like to be near the sea
Do you like to be in the hills
Do you like it flat

Once you have decided these things then you can start to look at the suburbs of Melbourne.

To give you an idea we live on the top of the Mornington Peninsula and it takes us over an hour by freeway to get to the airport its over one hundred kilometres.

I used to work in Dandenong and it was 34 kilometres away from where I live.

The CBD of Melbourne is seventy kilometres from where I live.

Four million people live here and as op has said its a very large place and all the time I have lived here over thirty years there are suburbs I have never been to.

Dear JP

We have a 3 BR house in McCrae (Mornington Peninsula) which we rent out if you are interested in some short term accommodation. It is a about 1 - 1.5 hrs from Melb city but a beautiful part of the world and very close to the beach.
Can send pictures, area description and prices if you want to explore this further.

Regards

Andrew

Hi JP

Maybe the west might be a little better for you. It has alot of industry on that side of town as well as the toyota factory, the ford plant would be about 20 to 30 minutes away and that would be against peak hour traffic!!!
Altona is classed as an industral suburb but has a great family beach and when in town you don't notice the factories etc as they are built away from the town. (30 minutes from the cbd)
Williamstown is really nice and you can get some great views of the city has a wonderful town center and is also on the beach good schools etc but you will need money to live there.... (20 minutes from the cbd)
Werribee, Hoppers Crossing have large shopping centers and would be the cheapest part to live in the west (about 35 minutes from the cbd)
If your looking for a new build Point Cook, Terneit would be the place to have a look.
If you don't mind living away from the beach then you have areas like Deer Park, Sunshine, St Albans, Footscray but be warned to look around as there are some not so nice areas.
If i was you I'd find the areas of work 1st then look for a house. The last thing you want is to find a nice area then realise you need to travel 2+ hours to work

All the best

Geoffrey

yep, we are in sanctuary lakes Point Cook, my husband gets the train into melbourne everyday it's about 40 mins, you can drive on the freeway into the city in about 20 mins ( depending on traffic ) we have been here now since Jan 09 and are settled, we have a 12 month lease at 450 pr week in sanctuary lakes however, its a massive 2 storey house, you can get a big single storey ( virtually new ) in point cook for around 350 pr week. You can view rentals on realestate.com.au or domain.com.au, but you do have to view properties before you can sign up, these viewings usually happen on a sat/sun, a whole load of potential tenants plod around the properties, you hand in your forms and hope your's is the best application. You can increase your chances by including photocopies of job offers, passports, advanced rent etc.
I've a 2 yr old there's lots for him to do and i've made so many good friends here x
good luck x
