Advice PLEASE on schools in Werribee area
Hi,
We are hoping to move to Werribee / Hoppers Crossing area later this year (depending when house here in Scotland sells). I have a 14 year old son and nearly 10 year old daughter and very worried about picking the right school for them, especially for my son as he will be starting his exams next year, hoping to arrive with few months left of this year to give him time to settle and make friends before stress of exams next year.
Have been looking for info on schools for them both i.e exams results statistics but finding this very hard. So far, i am thinking of Werribee primary and Secondary and also The Grange in Hoppers Crossing. Can anyone give me their opinion on both these schools plus open to any info on any other good school in that area.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated.
thanks
Maz x

Hi Maz
I was just thinking about you! Sorry I can't help you with schools as my kids are still too young. I do know Point Cook has some good schools and its an area developing at a quick rate! When are you hoping to come over? Does you oh have a job to come to? As you know my oh is a plumber and to be honest work here is hard to come by and its not that well paid and its also entirely different to the UK. He will need to register and then attend college so please keep a couple of dollars spare (ie $1000). If you need any other help email us and keep in touch.
Don't be to shocked with what I have written as we are loving it here and the lifestyle is great but it is a lot harder than the TV programs make out.
Valerie

Hi Valerie
Nice to hear from you. No my oh doesn't have a job to come to yet. We have received our state sponsorship and are waiting on a case office just now, have our house on the market but not much interest yet so was going to wait until we have a better idea of when we are going before he starts applying for jobs etc.
You mentioned that the plumbing jobs are very different there than the UK, do you think its worth our while taking my ohs tools with us? Obviously we cant take them with us and have to go in the container which would mean they will take over 2 months to get there anyway.
I'm so glad you're all still enjoying it there, where about is it your staying again and has your oh got work ok?
Luv Maz x

Dont worry about exams this is a totally different system with a totally different curriculum. He wont be having "exams", if at all, for a few years yet and certainly not next year.

Don't bother applying for jobs until you are here, we sent about 80 letters/cv's to companies while we were in Scotland and only got 1 reply but they didn't have any work. Bring your oh's tools are they are a fortune over here. My oh brought a toolbox on the plane so that he had the basics to start of and our container was delivered 2 weeks after we arrived so he had some more. I don't know what sort of work your oh done in Scotland but the best chance of a job over this side of the city is with a house builder and to do that your oh will also need to get a red card course booked and he will also need to register with the plumbing industry commission. My oh has a job doing gas repairs but its based in the north of the city. Also a bit of advice a plumbing wage is not enough to keep a family of 4 but if you are going to work you will be ok.
We're renting in Point Cook just now and like this area but we also like Hoppers Crossing and Werribee but won't be buying for a while yet!
Anything else you need, just ask.
Valerie

Hi Valerie
Thanks for the advice. Yes i will be working too, hopefully in real estate side. Do we need to wait till we are there for oh to book red card course and to register with plumbing industry commission or can we do that from here once we know when we are going? Thanks for the tip on taking basic tools then rest in container, will probably do that.
How are you all settling in, is everyone friendly and have yous made friends?

Can't register or book courses until you are here! Red Card courses are on certain days of the month and fill up pretty quickly! Plumbing Commission will ask your oh to go into the office to speak to him! He will need to bring all his qualifications too.
Everyone is really nice and friendly and we have met some nice people! It helps when you have kids as everything is aimed for them!
Anything else just ask.

Hi Quoll,
Thanks for your reply, i'm confused and clueless regarding the oz education but trying hard to find out as much as i can.
I thought pupils had to sit 'vce' exams which is the equivalent of british gcse? If we stayed here my son would be starting 4th year in august which is the gcse exam year, do you know if that is equivalent to ozzie year 10? confused as uk has 7 primary years then 6 academy years which equals 13 years in total but ozzie schools only go up to year 12, sorry if i'm being a bit thick but really need to get my head round all this as kids education is SO important to us especially the age my son is at.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Maz

We are also considering werribee, it seems to have property to rent quite resonably. We have a 14 year old who needs to go to school so if when you get there you find out more about the local schools could you let me know. We will be arriving in april.
Thank you

Hi Ruth & Don,
We contacted Werribee Secondary College and they were a brilliant help, very informative and did everything they could to help, was very impressed with the school in general!
The schools website address is www.werribeesc.edu.au we are also looking at Wyndham Vale (Manor Lakes Estate) and Werribee Secondary is also the school for that area which is great!
Feel free to contact me when you're arriving or arranging schools and will be happy to help.
All the best
Maz x
