How safe are the trains at night?

Can anyone tell me if the trains are safe at night, in particular the Pakenham line. I have a night out on Friday night but it looks like I will have to get the train home myself but I don't feel comfortable about it.

Hi Fiona
To be honest I don't travel on the trains a lot but on New Years Eve we always catch the train from Dandenong in to the city and back again at midnight and have never had any trouble and I have felt safe. I went to the CBD a few months back on business and didn't head off home till 10pm and again I felt totally safe and there were lots of other female passengers travelling alone. There have been isolated cases of attacks on the trains throughout Melbourne but it is not the norm.
Have a great night out!!!
Kate

My daughter uses the train at night sometimes, and has not had a problem, they do reduce the size of the trains so that everyone is sitting in a few carriages.

I know you hear a lot about trains but considering the number of journeys and the people who use them think they are ok.
