Help needed !!!

Hi, everyone

We are in the process of filling in our State Sponsored forms for Victoria, and need help as we dont want to get anything wrong at this stage.
We have gone onto as many threads as we can possibly read about living and working in Victoria, but just wondered if any of you out there can give us some advise on what to write on the forms as we dont want to go over the top. But also dont want to be failing by not putting enough information on them.
Damon is a roof tiler, so we are hoping to be able to find work, as we have read that the state is building 20,000 new homes, and refurbishing 45,000.
The areas that we have been looking at are Bairnsdale, Nowa Nowa and Orbost and just wanted to know if anyone is living there and can give us any information on cost of living, housing and general expences.

Thanks for your help in advance
Damon and Jacky

Hi Damon
Unfortunately, I am not qualified to give advice on visas etc. However, I think the best person you could contact would be Alan at Go Matilda, he is based in Geelong, Victoria but also has offices in the UK.

What details of information are you after?

These areas are about 3 - 4 hours drive from Melbourne. Its in what we call the Gippsland lakes area and is a meca for holiday makers during the summer (still the winter but not as many).

The journey is easy (dual carriageway most of the way 110km speed) with plenty of places to stop off and its many dead straight.

Seems to be plenty of work around we have a house in Metung which we built a few months back and there are plenty of housing developments/estates. What people may be interested in are that these estates are set within mature trees so the benefit of new build but with establised area feel. And most have spectactular views of the lakes and surrounding mountain ranges.

Might also be worth mentioning that Hotham is about 2 hours drive north up the Alphine road. Hotham and Dinner plain (places you will no doubt see on a map) are ski resorts popular with Melbournians.

Hard to compare cost of living without understanding your own individual standards or should I say preferences. Just remember that smaller population entails spreading overheads over smaller base. Also as a seasonal holiday area finding accomodation in Nov to March might be both difficult and expensive - please note this is purely my opinion others may have different experiences.

Fishing is fantastic and the place is even more laid back than Melbourne. All the locals are friendly and I should think it would not take long to settle in comfortably.

Housing stock (existing) in my opinion is poor quality ie weatherboard with poor insulation but sitting on fantastic plots of land. So build your own well insultated home and enjoy the lifestyle.

As has been said I like the area, like Orbost but its a bit more isolated than Bairnsdale and not as big and in the forest.

If you are into boating of any description the lakes are great. We often drive over Hotham and Dinner Plane or over Falls Creek way and its a twisty turny Road down. Log truck territory.
