what is the weather like..
Im not 100% sure what the seasons are like in melbourne and victoria in general ive looked on line and sights ive visited are giving average highs and lows, which to be honest are ten degrees apart at times so it could be 10 degrees or 20 degrees, so im not sure so very confused now so if anyone who is there can give me a few pointers as to what the temps have been this year, giving coldest months hotest months and what the temps were like etc, and what is the weather like in the coldest months rainfall wind etc etc... and anything else that will be helpfull... we are trying to make up our budget and want to factor in things like air con and heating.. regards dizz...

Dizzy, hi,
Melbourne has four distinct seasons: the opposite to the Northern Hemisphere -
Summer: Dec to February, warm to hot ,often 20C plus and Feb can be very very hot, often around 30C plus, and sometimes 40C plus but not too much humidity (unlike Qld). We can get summer thunder storms (big ones)
Autumn: March to May - chilly mornings and cold nights, sunny crisp days, some mild days, some rainy days.
Winter: June to August - quite cold to very cold, sunny some days, sometimes can get 'cold snaps' then some milder weather.
Spring: Sept to November - some pleasant 20C plus days, often lots of rain, some cool days, and some lovely warm days.
Sounds a bit all over the place doesn't it? And it can be, so the thing is bring a coat, Melbourne can get cold and windy! You will certainly need airconditioning in summer and good heating (central ducted is common) as well.
It is a mediterranean type of climate, and can be temperamental as well, it is famous for 4 seasons in one day
Today it has been quite mild and sunny today, around 18C, but tonight is very chilly outside, there has been some frost on the cars the past few mornings.
Hope this helps.

hi yes, We picked Melbourne because the weather was cooler than the rest of Australia, We ARRIVED IN DEC and went through the very extream weather they had , I have just been out and bought some electric blankets (lol) never thought id need them things again, we came from BUXTON IN DERBYSHIRE where it has its own weather most of the time and boy it got cold there, so i have to agree for us now its cold , when you get used to hot weather you notice the change in temp quickly. We have also realised that GAS AND ELECTRIC AND WATER is far cheaper here than what we were paying for in the uk.Hope this helps

And the wonderful thing about Melbourne is that you can get all those 4 seasons in one day! It can be bloody hot (cf the days that sparked the latest bushfire episodes) and it can be bloody cold - stand on Flinders St station in the middle of July and the wind wont have stopped anywhere on its journey up from the South Pole and Damart thermals are a necessity. Rainwise - well, they are in a bit of trouble with their water supplies at the moment and water is being diverted from crop growing areas so the population of Melbourne can flush their loos.

And yet when I visited East Gippsland recently, they aren't short of water, only 4 hours away, isn't it incredible. There has been talk about building another damn down there, but the Victorian government says they won't do it, too costly.

Yup it is absolutely stupid. It isnt the cost, its the Greens! The cost of a new dam down there would be far less than the desal plant they are going ahead with - and would last them longer and cost them less in the long run as well but there might be some small potoroo or spotted gumbie which would be decimated by the building of a dam so they wont do it.
I love East Gippsland - we almost bought in Orbost recently and it has to be one of the greenest places in Vic. No jobs and the flies are awful but lovely place.

Yes, you are right about that too Quoll, the greens I mean, but one government bullduster (as they all are!) also spoke about costings, and how it wouldn't necessarily work, etc, and yet that de sal plant in Wonthaggi is in an area with rising sea levels.
My Scottish mother was right when she said that some governments are just 'bo'heeds' (Is that the spelling, I always assumed that meant 'boofheads' ? Any Scots correct me please? ). In any case, she was right I think.
I visit Paynesville quite often, my brother lives there, and I would love to live down there, houses well priced right near the beautiful lakes, and in a place called Bruthen just along the way, gorgeous scones fresh from the oven and home made jams by the girls who own the cafe in the main street. Yum....
And speaking of weather, it is often a few degrees warmer in the winter to Melbourne.
Bugger it being 3-4 hours drive, or I'd live there, as I am wanting a sea change.

Thanks for clearing that up Dizz, yep she was right about government officials. By the way I am sitting next to my heater watching the weather forecast - 18C today, cool, cloudy. Brisbane is 24C, Perth is 25C and Darwin 33C, So you can see the variations in the temperature - at least you can snuggle up with a fire or blanket or a person - I like to do all three I don't get cold for long...............
