Near to the CBD would suit you, look at Richmond, South Bank, Docklands, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Carlton, North Melbourne, CBD itself, West Melbourne, going a bit further out South Yarra, Prahran, St Kilda, Elwood all good areas for single people.
There is a good live band scene not that I know much about it but my daughter is into live bands etc.
Have a look at Cityhobo Moving to Sydney or Melbourne? Find where to live with Cityhobo - Home
Also quite a few young Brits already in Melbourne, have a look at Britvics.
Good luck

Noticed that you say your visa will not let you live in the city and you are looking at Geelong, Geelong is a lovely place. Bendigo is good too, both my children did post graduate at Latrobe Uni there and both of them loved Bendigo, lots of night life and having a large university lots of young people around.
Have a look at cityhobo site

Thats good to hear. I've just had my agent come back to me and apparently the vic government are happy for me to go under a 176 visa which allows me to stay where I want in Vic now vipppeeee! Takes a lot of pressure off. I can now have a good look round to see whats best and defo give Bendigo a look

Scott, I can say with confidence that you will LOVE St Kilda! It is about 20mins by tram to the city, very accessable....St Kilda itself is packed with character, great nightlife, beach, bars, cafe's....I find it EXTREMELY hard to stay in of a weekend!! I currently live here (moved from Reading in the UK) and LOVE it. Absolutely no regrets and feel I live in the best place in the world.
I am VERY into my house/trance music, loved the Ibiza and London scene back home and have not been disappointed moving here...Paulo Mojo played at a "free" Sunday Sessions event here recently..as well as Hernan Cattaneo (not sure if you know them or what type of music you are into) not that that should influence any decision but there are the good artists here....!! There are festivals galore (all pretty local) and a great live band scene....even if thats not your thing you will more than likely get into it.
There is a magazine called "The Beat" over here which often advertises for artists, singers, DJ's etc....bit like a paper version of mixmag I guess....but you may find that useful when you are over.
Ive been all over Aussie and personallly, I dont think Ill ever live anywhere else than St Kilda...it rocks! Very chilled, un-pretencious and funky place (bit like Brighton or Camden if Im to compare it with anywhere at home.....)
If I can offer any advice or help let me know....I am more than happy to help.
Best of luck,
Clare

Oh and by the way...Im blonde so apologies for calling you Scott...Steve...haaaa....its all the partying...takes its toll!!! lol! X

And one more thing...sorry...Im not sure if Bendigo is the right place...been there lots...wouldnt say the nightlife is that hot and its a LONG way from anywhere (in UK terms of a long way), you kinda feel like you are a little deserted there.....just my opinion tho. X

There are plenty of pubs in Bendigo, I remember when my son went up there to do is dip ed first place he went was the pub, got to know people, daughter who loves late nights went out all the time in Bendigo, its all about getting out and about and meeting people I think wherever you live. My daughter and son liked it because they could "stagger" home after a night out and not have to drive.
