BTW all the Grammars are private here - fees about $15K pa. I think there are selective state High Schools in Melbourne which go from Yrs 9 - 12 (Melbourne and McRobertson - single sex selective schools). Catholic schools are much cheaper though.
Hi,

Why is it that most of the private schools are Catholic?
I didn't realise that Catholicism was very prevalent in Australia
I just assumed that COE would be the main religion (Not that we are church go-ers anyway)

Catholic is the most common religion in Australia followed by Anglican. I think the reason is the high number of people of Irish background. Also the post war immigration of hundreds and thousands of Italians and other Europeans.

Most private schools are not Catholic. Catholic schools are about 25% of total schools. Most Catholic schools except for the more prestigious ones do not charge anywhere near the costs of other private schools.

For example Catholic primary school would be about $1000 per year in Victoria regardless of how many kids you have.

Secondary school would be about $2000 per year to much more than that for the elite Catholic schools. Most Catholic schools would not fall into the expensive category.

Thanks

Thanks to all

The information is very interesting! I had no idea that most parents sent their children to private school, that is something i wouldnt even have considered in England as the fees are so high. But the fees dont seem to bad in Oz.

Also i have been looking into medical insurance in Oz for me and my family - we plan to have another baby in 2 - 3 years. can anyone recommend a good company to use? and do you know if you have to pay more if you are on a 457 visa?

Thanks again xx
