Melbourne suburb and living costs advice needed!

Hi all, after reading a few of these threads it seems there are loads of people here with a wealth of knowledge and experience with Melbourne. We need to tap in.

My girlfriend and I are moving to Melbourne in January and we have been trawling through property websites researching suburbs etc, to be honest its all become somewhat of a muddle now. We are in our in our late twenties with no children so at present we only have to think about ourselves. I wonder if someone will be able to advise us if our living accommodation and suburb choice is realistic, im not fussed if you are brutally honest.

We're looking to live in Malvern in a 2 bedroom house / flat. Anything half descent seems to be at the $400 - 450 PW range, we would like to be fairly close to the city, given our age we still like to think that we can mix it with the best of'em so we dont want to be too far from the action. From looking at job search websites and registering with a couple of agencies it seems our joint income should be approx $140k PA. The sums seem to suggest that we would be okay but does anyone think we are being unrealistic with our choice?

Cheers..........Mark & Caroline (now realizing that the move is getting very close).

Hi Mark and Caroline
You will manage no problem at all, it's when you have kids that's the problem, they drain all your money away

Hi Mark & Caroline,

That sounds absolutely fine. OH and I live in Camberwell, which is not far (and also a nice suburb if you are open to other areas around Malvern). We rent a nice unit for $320 a week and currently only on OH's salary (while I job hunt and temp!), which is much less than your expected combined salary.

PM me if you want anymore details - I'd be happy to help

Hazel

Mark, you'll be just fine with those earnings. You won't be rolling in it but I'm just up the road from there living on a lower combined income and doing just fine. If you're still young enough to like a drink / meal etc on the weekends then the inner SE suburbs are a good place to be.

Hi Mark & Caroline
You maybe disapointed if you "want to mix it up with the best of them" Australia is not like that, yes you have night clubs pubs etc but you will find its going out for meals going around to mates houses etc.
Have you thought about the docklands Albert park carlton fitzroy? places closer to the city may suit you better! Im not trying to rain on your parade and i love Melbourne its my home but i would hate for you to feel disapointed.
I hate to say it as i feel like a one trick pony but St kilda may be up your street? great night life public transport, parks and the beach all on your doorstep.

Geoffrey

Geoffrey,

Cheers for the warning, I suppose my post may have been a bit misleading but in saying "mix it up with the best of them" what I meant was not being too far away from decent bars and restaurants incase we fancy a night on the tiles every now and then. We're not serial clubbers............ I dont think i could get away with that anymore, the missus is starting to get the shackles on me. Thanks for the advice though, St Kilda may be okay for the odd night out but I dont think I could live there, Ive visited twice in recent years and have a basic taste for the suburbs. It seems that the inner SE suburbs are best suited for us, not far from decent bars etc. I was mainly concerned with the costs that living in the inner SE suburbs entails.

Im looking forward to living in Melbourne, taking everything into account its probably my favorite Aussie city. Where in Melbourne are you from?

Ta Geoffrey

Mark

Me im from the West but have spent time all over.

Thats good that you know what you want makes life alot easier. I would hate to see someone coming over expecting something there is not.

Good luck to you both, some advice with the misus... you need to put your foot down and show her your boss!!!! I'll send you a get well card whilst your recovering in hospital lol

Hi
We're hoping to move to Melborne too (eventually). We're looking round property websites and like the look of Point Cook. It seems to be an up and coming suburb, does anyone know anything about the area?
