We have just got our visas and are heading off for a reccie trip around Melbourne in Aug and hope to get out there in Aug 2009. My husband and I are both teachers and have 2 kids 5 and 8. We will have to do some relief teaching first before we get jobs. Any suggestions on where we should set up base- we would like to be near the sea. Has anyone applied for a teaching job from the UK and got one. I just wondered how easy it would be to do???
Thanks natalie (41 and welsh) John (46 and Cornish) Oliver ( 8 a Londoner) Jessica ( 4 soon to be 5 a Londoner)
We have just done a validating our visas trip to Melbourne in April this year. We stayed in Patterson Lakes in a rented apartment. Patterson Lakes is about 45 mins from the centre of Melbourne and has a beach at Carrum. We met up with some other PIOzzers in Mornington when we were out there (Hello if any of you are reading this!) and really liked the look of Mornington which is right on the beach. You would need a car if you stayed here, however you are right on the peninsula, it has some beautiful coastline and beaches and there is holiday accommodation available.
Hope this helps!

Hoping to be there soon!

Hi
We are heading to Melbourne - hoping March 09 depending on sale of house so will be interested to hear where you look. We are planning on looking all around the Mornington Peninsuala area + all the towns along the coast towards Geelong.
Let us know how you get on won't you?
Les

I am a Food Technology teacher, My husband is a an aging PE teacher/ senior teacher. I like horse riding although have not done it for a while as expensive in London , i like running, socialising etc. I was the main applicant as hubby over 45. My husband is into Cricket - plays for a Hertfordshire team, he also like footie and rugby. Ollie is 8 and loves singing, drama and dance, also seems to like cricket. Jessie is 4 nearly 5 and loves ballet and drama at the moment. I have got to find work initially hubby will have a little break and settle kids into school once out there. We have been to OZ about 8 years ago and lived in Willow Grove near Moe in GIppsland. speaking to some Aussies melbourne has expanded and have not got a clue where to start looking the West side looks cheaper but does it have plenty to do. East side looks expensive but busier. Any info would be good.

This is pretty much what we will do, so I will let you know, but it is difficult to really think where until you secure work, also it depends what we get for our house as they are not shifting fast. We decided to stay in our jobs for another year to try and save extra cash just incase we have to rent our house out in London, this is why we thought we would go out and have a visit.
Speak soon

Hi if you have the money the East side is fine, the West is growing, Williamstown has a great night life, cafe, bars etc. But from what you tell me i would say move to the country. Bendigo is 1 1/2 hrs out of Melbourne, Ballarat about the same distance; these would be the two I'd go to. They are very large country towns with lots to do but not that far from melbourne, lots of schools, private as well as public to choose from. Most I believe are crying out for teachers, etc.
The other reason I say country, is you can have your own horses lots of land if you want? You will definately get more for your money in the country too. There are also plenty of walks and you will generally find a great community spirit in the large country towns.
Hope this helps you, if anything it gives you something else to think about!!! If you have anything else you want to ask do not hesitate to contact me!
