We are heading to Melbourne at the end of the year. We spent a couple of weeks there earlier this year. When it rains it really does, it pours down then an hour later it is beautifully sunny for the rest of the day. We had many a day that started off pretty cool and damp then by mid morning we were having to strip off. Everyone told us there is a saying about Melbourne in that you get four seasons in one day and they are not wrong.

It is a fab place, don't be put off by a little damp weather!

We have been living in Mornington since October. The weather really hasn't been as awful as people make Melbourne weather out to be (and before anyone says Mornington isn't Melbourne - it is, it is south-metro Melbourne).

The summer was hot, many days in the mid to high 30s and a few in the 40s as well. We're now into Autumn and although we're feeling cooler (well compared to the summer weather it is cooler) it isn't cold like UK Autumn. We have also been quite lucky on the rain front. We can only have had about a dozen heavy rainfalls since October and we had rain yesterday for the first time in a couple of weeks.

Don't base your decision on where to live or whether to move on the reports of crappy weather. With global warming and climate change nothing is really that predictable and everything is slowly, but surely, changing.

Hi Paul and Jo
I don't know where you get the impression about the amount of rain that Melbourne gets. The state is in a drought situation, the reservoirs are only 31% full. The thing that Victoria needs just now is rain and lots of it. Since just before Christmas it has hardly rained at all, yesterday being the exception.
I could count the rainy days on one hand we've had this year. Even then it's hardly a rainy day as per UK standards, more like an occasional shower.
If the amount of rain is your only concern about Melbourne then you have nothing to worry about.
Regards
Mike

Melbourne's weather is perfect it suits everyboby 4 seasons in one day! no matter what you want you can get it at some point of the day!!!!!!!! lol, Max has the right idea its the life style..... i think however i would rather live in Melbourne during the summer as its a dry heat the further north you go the more humidity you get. live, love Melbourne

Melbourne has been short rain for the last 5 years so any website you look at won't be reflective for what actually happening at the moment.

To sum up the temperatures.
In the height of Winter the minimum tempature in the city very rarely goes below 10c. Average May-Jul would be around 13c.
Sep/Oct/early Nov & late Feb /Mar/Apr are very nice typically around 20-25c.
In the height of Summer tempartures can go past 40c but rarely than for a few days at which point it could drop over 25c with rain.

Melbourne is notorious for it's variable weather even during one day but it does give it a homely feel.

I think rain is quite important, you know, for drinking and washing ect.

We're moving to Adelaide and the lack of rain there worries me a bit.

Drought is definatly worse than a bit of rain. They pray for the stuff in some places.
