social groups

Hi everyone
we are thinking of moving to melbourne in the next few years, we are coming over for a holiday in oct'08' can anyone tell me if there are any social groups that are up and running in the melbourne area? i guess you would call me lucky as im Austalian but im worried over my partner as she is English and i dont want her feeling all alone, and it would be nice to know that she had a ready group of freinds waiting!?
thanks Geoffey

Hi Geoffrey,
When in October are you visiting and where are you going? I wouldn't know of any social groups, but we are also hoping to move to Melbourne in the next 18 months - 2 years and are also visiting in October.
You are lucky to be Australian and you are also very nice to be concerned about your partner!

Hi, we are only going for 2 weeks this time (just came back from a 4 week trip in January!), we will be staying with my sister in North West Melbourne for 1 week but also plan to spend a week in Mornington as that is the area we are thinking of moving to. We haven't decided on exact dates yet - but probably the middle two weeks of October. If you are around Phillip Island/Mornington Peninsula during that time, maybe we could meet for a coffee (or something stronger...)? We would like to visit Phillip Island but not sure if we will have time this time as I also want to re-visit Geelong/Ocean Grove. I'll get in touch when we know what we are doing. Where in Melbourne are you from originally?

hard to say? spent the first 9 years around the thomastown area then moved to deer park for 4 years then off to country victoria /maldon near castlemaine bendigo then moved to Tassie from there travelled around oz Qld,SA,NSW got older and wiser moved back to Melbourne bought a house in Melton sold that and moved to point cook. so im from all over the place but i would class the western suburbs of Melbourne my home. i drive for a living and there are so many opportunities in that area. alot of places are nicer to live but unless you have the money you need to work hard to keep the dream alive. sorry going on, look forward to seeing you in oz take care Geoffrey & Tracy

My sister lives in Melton, although she is hoping to move. We had decided on Mornington but are now wondering if we should look at Ocean Grove/Geelong instead because of work opportunities. Knowing the areas like you obviously do, what do you think? Steve is an electrician and I can do anything admin/secretarial. Like you say, if you settle in the wrong area and life is even more of a struggle, what's the point?!

my advise, take with a pinch of salt, but i would be looking at new suburbs with a lot of new houses being built but somewhere with industry for yourself. in my opion, for example, in the west you have the Point Cook area with a lot of new houses being built but in Altona, just down the road, there is alot of factories where im sure they need the admin side, neither of you want to travel to far for work so its trying to find the right balance. on the other side of town thomastown has the admin side and south morang has the new houses so mill hill could be the perfect spot? but saying that your husband could get work anywhere so maybe its more important to set yourself up. something to chew over the areas you talk about are wonderful and i dont know your financial situation but why not buy a resonable house in the burbs and a weekender in the bush? or a caravan as during the week when your working long hours you cant enjoy the view its only at the weekend and then you want to go out? like i said its only something else for you to think about.
take care
Geoffrey
