royal melbourne hospital and ? living in south yarra/toorak/prahan
Hi
We are a professional couple who will be immigrating to Melbourne in July for 1 year to work in the royal Melbourne hospital. We were wondering if anyone could recommend a good 2-week holiday rental in south yarra/ toorak/ prahan area to base ourselves while looking for a more permanent house in these areas
Are these areas feasibly in cycling distance to the royal Melbourne hospital or is there good/ fast/reliable public transport facilities connecting the two areas?
Also any thoughts on the long-term suitability of living in south yarra/ toorak/ prahan while commuting to the royal Melbourne. We know Carlton and Collingwood are closer but have heard some mixed reports about these areas
All help greatly appreciated

I had a look around collingwood not a place I would like to be late at night.
South yarra is the closest and probably best for transport.
Not sure if there is a direct service to royal Melbourne north of the city
Trams 55 , 59 , 19 run close to the royal Melbourne.
Trams run about every 10-min at peek times but take twice as long as trains.
There must be at least a half dozen trains to the city per hour.
For a single zone ticket cost’s $6.50 which can be used on the trains or trams.
All day in zone one.
You can get weekly tickets which work out cheaper.
I would estimate 30min on bike it is not the distance it is the fact you have to stop
At every junction & wait for traffic.

I was incorrect there are over 20 trains per hour at peek times to the city from south yarra
Only 8 trains per hour from Toorak.
Map of train & tram lines
http://www.railpage.org.au/railmaps/melbourn.htm
The quickest route from the South Yarra is
The train to Melbourne Central or Flagstaff , then tram to The Royal Melbourne hospital
Frankston Line
South Yarra 08:00
Melbourne Central 08:08
Flagstaff 08:10
About 6 trams per hour 10 min to The Royal Melbourne hospital.

Royal melbourne hospital and ? living in fitzroy
Thanks for all the advice
seems south yarra and surrounds may not be the ideal geographical location for the royal melbourne
Have now heard that Fitzroy may be the most convenient (maybe even walking distance)
Any advice on its pros and cons. seems like a nice residential area with plenty to do
Also does anyone know of good short term holiday rentals around fitzroy whlie we look to rent a house
Many thanks

Sth Yarra Toorak Central Melbourne area
Hi - I am a new member in PomsinOz. My wife used to be the Royal Melbourne's CEOs personal assistant - and we lived in Toorak & Sth Yarra because it is easy to get to the Royal Melbourne and avoids having to live in the crowded part of town. Depends on what you both will be doing I guess. Have a look at some videos of the area - from VEOH or YouTube. There are many more short term accommodation places available in Sth Yarra than in Fitzroy area of course. Some operators rent out 100's, that used to be rental flats, just for short term. One of my friends owns part of questapartments.com.au
I just uploaded a property for rent soon in Toorak South Yarra area - see RentalsinOz.com - that is a web site linking to this - see Migration, accommodation blogs. It would be too big for you of course, but there are heaps of people here renting out "below the radar" like me.
Bike riding is fun in Melbourne, and south of the Yarra is where the fun starts.
Cheers

Thanks for you reply,
Did you have trouble renting in general?.
I hear the market is very tight.
Is there anything I can do before I move (june) to optimise my chance of renting-references etc.
Am probably going to try fitzroy/ carlton.
Kew seems a bit far out but has better choice

I looked at Carlton back in December when I arrived, but thought you pay so much over the odds for the location that the houses themselves weren't great value. I ended up in Brunswick, and have just bought there after renting for 5 months.
There's not much you can do ahead of time except look on-line and check where places are and what rents are being asked. It can be stressful once you arrive, having to wait for the weekly list of places coming up for rent, then going to look within the half-hour inspection time slot, but I think that's just what you have to do, and it does seem to work out. I had copies of references, bank statements etc. but the estate agent wasn't that bothered, and the owners weren't even interested in cash upfront, they just thought I looked honest. Don't let yourself panic, would be my advice, and bear in mind there's far more competition at the cheaper end of the market. You could end up being the only ones going for a property if you're lucky.
Hope you find a suitable place.

hi if you want to live close to the hospital and take public transport, the best form of public transport would be by tram as it goes by the hospital. if you go to Metlink - Your guide to public transport in Melbourne and Victoria and follow the links to the maps you can see what line goes past and what suburbs it travels through. also you can take your bikes on the trains so you could live further out and ride from the city 10 minutes?
hope this helps
Geoffrey
