Hi Lee and Tracy,

I have one but I am working away from home at the moment so can't access it. If you don't have any luck over the next day or so, PM me and I'll email it to you on Saturday when I get home.

Hi _ i was trying to find out about the Melbourne suburbs of Rowville and Melton. Do you think you would be able to email me a copy of the guide too ? Another member tried to, but I never had the private message. I would be very grateful.

Where to live in Melbourne guide

Do you think you would be able to email me a copy of the guide as well? I can't decide on whether to move to the suburbs, or a bit further out into the country. Thanks in advance, Greengrass x

I've got a copy that I'm happy to share - just PM me and I'll e-mail one back.
Please note though that I haven't worked out how to attach documents to a PM (advice on this would be well received).

Just send me your conventional e-mail address and I'll bounce you the docs that I have.

Smile where to live when I arrive

Hi

I am loking for some advice on where to live in and around melbourne. I will be working in the docklands. Would prefer to avoid a significant commute. I have a 8 month daughter so would like somewhere appropriate for her too.

Will be on a sponsored visa and any tips on finding rentals would be good.

Please let me know which suburbs to definetely avoid.

Cheers

Andy

Hello, We moved to Melbourne 4 weeks ago. A big tip is to look at the web sites before you leave the U.K to suss out prices and whats to offer. Then when you arrive here start going to inspections as soon as possible as the process can take a while. We found the longest wait was to actually view the property as they only have it open for inspection on certain days for about 15mins.
We are currently in Pascoe Vale as needed to be near the centre for work, nice area with good transport links. Lots of parks which was essential as we have 2 year old twins. Good luck, hope all goes well. Feel free to contact if you need any other advice, Daz and Emma.

Thanks to everyone who replied and sent us the copy of the guide you really are a helpfull bunch.
We read the guide and decided to stay in Manchester as some of the areas sound as bad as Moss Side (only kidding) but it did open our eyes abit.
Just deciding on which visa to aply for at mo ? Iam a mechanic and have been for years on various types of vehicle and have to do a skills test aparently. This has annoyed me as i have alot of checkable work background and experience yet it still aint good enough?? Just a way to get money off you i suppose.
Does anyone know whats involved in these tests as i absolutely dread stuff like this.

Thanks again
Lee & Tracy

Hi Lee and Tracy,
One thing to bear in mind though, when considering an area to live, is that the crime figures etc are all relative. Also, an area can get a reputation because of a very small part that may be a couple of miles at least from the area where you live. For instance, the area where my sister lives is considered one of the worst in Melbourne (and she does want to move...) but parts of it are quite nice, it is considered to be potentially 'up and coming' and it is nowhere near as bad as places I have seen in the UK. For every person on this site who says a particular area is 'bad' there will be one more who disagrees! I think the message is, keep an open mind, where possible look for yourself and you will know if somewhere suits you or not. Regarding the skills test, my husband has been an electrician for over 20 years. He has every qualification that it is possible to get, original certificates, fantastic references from every job he has had - and he still has to do a paper and practicial skills test. Whats more, he will have to do further training when we get there! So I think you would be very lucky to avoid it...Good luck!
