Melbourne Cup Advice

Hi Everyone,

I know its some time off yet, but can anyone offer advice on whether men have to wear suits at the Melbourne Cup? Is it formal dress or smart casual. Husband is moaning because he thinks it will be too hot for suit and tie (I think it might be abit chilly?) and daughter crying because she hates dressing up. Have looked at the Race website and I think you do dress up - others say its casual depending on where in the grounds you stand. You're all probably really stressed with visa stuff so I appreciate anything you can pass on.
Thanks!
Joanne

We went to the Melbourne cup in November whilst visiting.. I wore a black dress and shoes (took black flip flops for journey home), although felt out of place without a hat or hair decoration (going to stock up before we move he he).. My husband wore a suit, he took a tie but didn't wear it but might have to in certain areas? We had stand pass but didn't use them because had our 1 year old with us but also had an enclosure pass which was fab. So clean, had seats and table (get there early). Never had to queue for toilets and they were clean and no queue to get a drink. You cannot wander outside enclosures with drinks.
Didn't see anybody in jeans there and everyone was dressed up. Think there is a casual area for people who bring picnics and sit on the grass but not sure. Everyone I saw was dressed up..

Have fun. It was a great day out with lot's of champagne. Yummy..

Hi Shani,

Thanks for your reply. I was always going to get dressed up as imagine it to be like our Grand National. However, Husband doesn't like wearing a full suit if he doesn't have to. Did you get your tickets before you went or on the day and what time would you recommend arriving? Read that there is a tram that drops off outside one of the entrances so I assume thats a good way to get there?
Thanks again,
Joanne
