Unhappy Victoria Weather

Hi all i am pretty new to all this i have been reading for a while, we are in very early stages of Australia immigration, in that we wont be going for about 3 years but we are going on a reccy next year and we have been researching for the last year and a bit.

My question is ; what is the weather really like in victoria we are looking at going to Geelong, some people have said it gets quite cold, do they mean like as cold as in uk winters or just ozzy cold. We dont want to go abroad if its going to be as cold as uk so we may need to look at other warmer areas

Weather in Melbourne is seasonal and they can have 4 seasons in one day! Winters can be cold and grey one day and blue skies the next. Not as cold as the UK though.

2 years ago we had hail/snow on xmas day and it was freezing - and that's their summer! 2 days before it had been 40 degrees and we'd been on the beach................ If you're moving to Australia for a warmer climate and better weather then maybe Melbourne isn't for you!

We have been here since June last year (the beginning of there winter) and spent many a day on the beach. Ok the temp was not in the 20's but the sun was shining and we had bright blue skys.

I can honestly say that yes it does get cold here but you are not looking at anything like UK weather. We didnt need big winter coats, hats gloves etc....a light weight jacket was fine.

The summer in Melbourne was fantastic the temps were mid to late 30's and early 40's. We have had very little rain fall and are in need of some desperatly.

The temps this week have been mid 20's which I can tell you is a welcome break from the very hot summer that we have just had.

Ok we dont get the year round hot weather that other parts of Oz have although I can honestly say that the weather in Melbourne is absolutly nothing like the UK so not even worth comparing!!

Hope this helps a bit

We too are heading to Melbourne and the weather sounds ideal, working in a hot climate does not appeal. The seasons are something we would miss from the uk.

I believe that although the winters days might not be very warm they are much brighter than the days here.

If it were hot most of the time i'm afraid I would find it too difficult to get off my sunlounger

Very true...........I love the bright blue skies in Melbourne............

Deb - do you know how easy it is to go to the mountains for ski-ing? Reckon it'll be pretty cool to go ski-ing on weekend and then the beach the next!

The weather is fab in Melbourne. My mum lives in Melton which is not far from Geelong and the sky is always clear and on the rare days that it is a bit grey its never too cold to bare. My mum has a coat but never ever uses it! The summers are lovely too, the heat is dry not sticky like other areas so you can chill in the shade for as long as u like :) ver nice

Treat Geelong as a massive outer suburb of Melbourne really. As I've just mentioned in another post just now, Melbourne is a perfect stepping stone for UK folk to start life. It's weather is similar to the UK only it doesn't get quite AS cold in winter, however it rains there a lot!!! Four seasons in one day...yes very very true! It does have a proper winter and has been known to snow every couple of years or so. Summer can often have a heatwave, bringing high temperatures in the high 30's (degrees celsius that is) but it is more of a dry heat in Victoria, and less likely to make you sweat, unlike the high humidity in summer up in Queensland. I've been in Queensland for 7 years now, and still don't like the sticky summers. Give me a Victorian summer any day. Victoria also has two of the countries, and in my opinion two of the BEST tourist attractions. The Grampians and The Great Ocean Road. Be sure to see The Grampians over a week, as there is so mch to see. And if you don't drive from Melbourne to Mount Gambier along the Great Ocean Road while living there in VIC, you are CRAZY!!! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Victoria is a BEAUTIFUL place to live. Small state but SO much to offer!
