Where to live if you have to go to CBD

Hi

OH and I are just at the start of this process but we are really keen on Melbourne and have had a look at some of the suburbs recommended on here. The only thing is that OH is in IT Security and I'm an Accountant and when I'm looking at jobs it seems that we (mainly OH) will struggle to work outside of the CBD. If that's the case which areas are nice for a young family but commutable? We have a 4 year old son and obviously shcools are also important to us.

Thanks in advance

Vicky

I don't know about the school side but there are lots of really nice places to live south of the CBD towards the edge of the bay (Chelsea, Sandringham, etc). I'd avoid North & West Melbourne suburbs.

I'd get somewhere close to a train line or if it's fairly close to the CBD near a tram line so that you can commute in rather than driving.

Having lived in South Yarra myself while on my 457, I'd highly recommend it. Public transport to the CBD is so convenient, and yet it has a village feel to it if you live slightly away from Chapel Street. I lived within a walking distance from Chapel St, and there's always plenty of places to visit, shop, eat etc. There are plenty of schools around the area. Try Prahran, Malvern, Toorak (if you can afford it), Hawthorn (a bit further out but not that much). Good luck!

Hi,
Try Alphington, Fairfield or Ivanhoe for good schools and easy transport to city.
Good luck

Hi Vicky

Hope you dont mind but I had to post a reply as you are first person on here I have come across who's husband is in IT Security, just like mine. You are not far from us in Darlington either, we are near Northallerton.

Anyway, was wondering how your husband is getting on with the ACS??? and whether you are going alone with the application or appointed an agent???

I did live in melbourne about 7 years ago now, but I wouldn't want to recommend any suburbs as I was single and careful and didn't really care much about whether it was suitable for familes or what the schools were like. Wish I did pay more attention now.......

All the best with everything

Hi

Thanks all for your replies. I'll check those areas out.

Mandisfam I'm afraid I can't be much help with the ACS as we have decided to wait a year and use my CIMA qualification rather than go through the ACS assessment - it just seems far easier to go on my qualifications than my husband's. I have spoken to 2 agents who advised us that because we both have careers on the MODL it would be easiest to use mine. Good luck with your application and I hope you can find someone who can help.

Thanks again

Vicky

Hi Vicky, Thanks for your reply. I did wonder if that would be the case, guessed your profession would be on the modl. There is quite a few on here doing the ACS so there is plenty of help.

Good luck with everything.
