Advice on regional Victoria

Hi there

Can anyone offer opinions/advice on the following regional areas please:-

Point Lonsdale, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Wonthaggi, Moe & Sale.

We are mid 30's (who am I kidding, just realised I am actually late 30's - never mind), no children so schools aren't important but want a place that isn't in the middle of nowhere with plenty of shops, scenery, reasonably priced housing and a bit of a social life.

Can anyone tell us what the above places are like in view of what it is we are after? I'm asking because it is a regional 457 we are after getting.

Thanks.

Jo

I've been to Ballarat once and found it to be really nice but not sure how much there is to do round there.

Have you considered Bendigo? It's a really nice city with lots of facilities and surrounded by bushland.

No I haven't, I've just had a quick look at it on travelvictoria.com and also expedia. Thanks for that. Do you know how far (roughly) it is from a beach. Not a priority but I'm just wondering.

Thanks again.

Can't speak for the other places, but Ballarat has all the factors in your list. It's a fine city, good shopping, theatres, cinema, live music, restaurants, pubs, clubs. Lots of open air sports/recreational facilities too (except sailing, cos Lake Wendouree is dry). Housing very reasonable compared to Melbourne. Plus, it's only 110 km from Melbourne on the freeway, an hour and a quarter by train, which costs around $20 return and includes free travel on Melbourne's trams etc. Melbourne's Tullamarine airport is handy from Ballarat too, and there's a regular shuttle bus service there from Ballarat rail station.

Point Lonsdale is great, but is a small seaside town - I swim in the ocean there over the summer.

You would probably be looking at working in Geelong (which is also regional) if living there.

Best regards.

Point Lonsdale is lovely but Ballarat would probably be cheaper. Ballarat has real Aussie country town feel to it and has a long gold mining based history. Gippsland (Moe and Sale) is nice and probably a bit greener than to the west of Melbourne (they are more likely to have floods than the west) and more easy access into the High Country if bushwalking is on your agenda.
