mornington -victoria -weather/jobs/homes

I was really set on going to Melbourne, perhaps Mount Martha, Mount Eliza or surrounding areas. But now, after watching wanted down under a few weeks ago, my Husband has said "it has as much rain as us"!

What is the weather like?

Do you have to travel miles to find work?

would $600,000 buy much in those areas?

Are there plenty of good schools?

Is there much for older children/young adults to do?

and my last question, is there any room left as so many seem to be going there?

thanks

Nikki

We have been in Mt Martha/Mornington for over a year now and love it.
The weather is hot and dry in the summer.....the 1st 2 days of the school summer hols we had monsoonal type rain, then not a drop till the day they went back. New years eve nite it didnt drop below 35 and we were still in the pool at 1.30 in the mornin. We have just had 5 days in a row of 100degree+ temps and finally this mornin it seems to have broke and we have had a little drop of rain, which we so badly need, altho' it is still 70 as I type and its not yet 8am. Last nite we stayed on the beach till 9pm and didnt get out of the water till then.
Autumn is the best time of year with temps around the mid 20's and lovely brite sunny days.
Victoria gets colder than most other states during the winter and last year where we live we had frost 3 mornings and a couple of days where it didin't get above 6 degrees. It was a shock to the system but so nice after the long hot summer. The other thing that struck me, is how quick winter was over. it only lasts about 8/10 weeks.....this isn't all parts of Vic tho' some areas get much colder for much longer as dont forget we have a snow here up in the mountains and a couple off good ski resorts.....thats why we love it here....surf one weekend, ski the next without even changing states!! If you want hot sunny days all year then Perth is probabley a better option for you, if you like your summers hot, sticky with lots of rain then try Queensland, neither of these places get as cold as Melbourne dose in the winter.
Work wise.........depends what you do.....My oh is a brickie works 10 mins away some weeks 2 hours away another but that was no different in the UK. My son has just started work as a draughtsman and it takes him 45 mins by car, I have just got an office job 5 mins from my front door. There is heaps of work down this way, for all trades.
$600.000 will buy you plenty down here, unless you want to go beach side with bay views, then you are lookin at a million+ but prices are rising stupidly fast.
There are plenty of good schools both state and private, primary and high school levels. As with any where in the world there are also some bad!!
The area is pretty much the country by the sea with fantastic beaches with views out across the bay to the city skyline and then you have the back beaches ocean side where you can surf. In between we have wineries, golf courses, stud farms and stables, day spas and wildlife sanctuarys.
It might not be everyones cup of tea but we love it!!
There is no main line station.......you have to go to Frankston for that and there are a couple of "rough areas" in between the good ones.
If you want to know more pm me.
Lesley

Hi Jonezys

We are looking to move to Melbourne this year, I have three children in secondary school, can you tell me if you have to pay for their education in Victoria, seem to be conflicting opinions on PIO.

Would appreciate your help.

Debbie

Depends which type of visa you are on.
If its a PR visa then no....altho' there are still some school fees.
If you are on a temp visa or work sponsored visa then I am pretty sure you will have to foot the bill.
