i have been watching this thread with interest - although i am moving to brisbane - i really like melbs - and i would rather move there but my job takes me elsewhere. i hope that everything people are saying here goes some way to saying why there are no bad threads about the place on PIO. and that you get some idea of some of the good places to go for a meal, a drink, a visit...
Well we are off to Melbourne on Saturday for a validating holiday so will keep an open mind whilst we are there. Look out for our report when we get back....
I'm sure its "horses for courses" and everyone sees different things.
Just hope we like what we find or we could be in for a bumpy ride

I'm suprised to hear you've found the restaurants so poor as Melbourne is world renowned as a 'foodie' city and is considered to be the best place on the planet to eat out by a large number of chefs and folk in the food industry. Friends of ours just moved back there and the quality of the food and places to eat was a major part of their decision. Same goes for a friend of mine who makes wine adn says Melbourne is sensational for food.
Just give it some time. We headed to Darling Harbour on our first day in Sydney after it was highly recommended and felt as you do now. The place is bloody horrible. After a few weeks we'd forgotten all about it though and have found some fantastic places.
Some of the graffitti is excellent in Sydney, maybe you should get a few folk from here to come down and give lessons :D
Yikes, buck,
What a bloody shame that all your dreams seem at the mo shattered to you - im sure given time you will see things differently & perhaps begin to like where you are. You have been through a long trip, emotions of living uk, and jet lag sets in. In the meantime sing to yourself (ok so now you think im mad but it works for me !!!)
Always look on the bright side of life. [whistling] Always look on the light side of life. [whistling]
If life seems jolly rotten, There's something you've forgotten, And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing. When you're feeling in the dumps, Don't be silly chumps. Just purse your lips and whistle. That's the thing. And...
Always look on the bright side of life. [whistling] Always look on the right side of life, [whistling]
keep ya chin up & keep smiling - it will be worth it in the end.
All the best

I have posted something similar to you but that was 4 years ago and on a different site. We arrived at 8.30pm and even in the dark the drive from the airport to a crumby caravan park in Chelsea did nothing to inspire us. At 5am the next morning my wife was in tears demanding we go back straight away and she could be back at her desk at work and pretend it was all a joke. Anyway we never intended being near the city and that morning we drove down to our intended destination, the Mornington Peninsula, and what a difference. Great beaches, beautiful scenery, countryside by the sea. Who could want any more? Anyway, we are still here and there has never been any mention of going back since we arrived on the Peninsula. You dont need to move to another state as someone suggested, just drive out of the city and enjoy what you have yet to see. If you feel that strongly about life in the city and you are looking for somewhere else to stay have a look at our website, Im sure your kids would love it down here, especially on our farm in Tyabb.
G'day Buck sorry you guys had a bad start - call it culture shock!
A city is a city IMHO and you are going to get good bits and bad bits wherever you go. If you are bonded to Vic for a couple of years, look at somewhere rural and you may get a bit of a different view - out to Ballarat or even further into Gippsland (dont know what you do for a crust but jobs are variable).
Personally I always avoid Melbourne like the plague apart from the occasional day trip which serves to remind me why I dont want to live there! Ditto Sydney!!!
I hope you are not stuck in your rental for aeons - that is why most of us always advise not to get a long term rental off the internet, you might end up in Footscray for example and be somewhat put off by the neighbourhood.
How can you possibly post an objective view within 24 hours of your arrival after so little sleep?
First impressions are better made known after at least a couple of weeks - with the benefit of having spent some time getting to know the lie of the land, and after you have gotten over the jetlag.
Best regards.

We stayed in Melbourne for 5 days visiting rellies and it didnt do anything for us either. Too much like London for me and we came for the Australian lifestyle and not a repeat of the English one!
Was glad to get back on a plane and come home to Brisbane
