Bricklayer and family hoping to move to Eltham, any advice

This is my first post. Permanent residency visas came through on 28th Dec, just accepted an offer on the house and hoping to move over to Melbourne at the end of the UK school year. Me (40), hubby Craig (44), Alice (7) Angus (3)... and Ashley (20) who is going to carry on at uni in Liverpool and commute!!!! Sob sob.....

Anyway, we have narrowed our search of where to stay to Eltham... never been so all our research has been via the internet... any opinions on the area, what are the house prices like at the moment, what can we expect to pay for a rental, how long does it take to get to the coast.

Alice will have finished Yr 2 over here in the UK - what year will she join in Oz and can anyone recommend any schools in or around Eltham?

Craig is a bricklayer... any brickies living in or around Eltham that could give us some info on work availability?

So many questions, sorry but have really enjoyed reading some of the posts on this site, some great stories and tips... it's just really addictive and I've got nothing done this afternoon at all........

Thanks alot and keeping my fingers crossed there is someone in Eltham that reads this

Morag

Hiya Morag i have no personal experience but we have friends who live in Melbourne who recently visited us in U.K to give us some info as we are also planning to move somewhere in Victoria. One of the places they mentioned was Eltham they said it was really nice don,t know if it might be a little pricey. If you look on the realestate.com/au website and type in Eltham you will get a good idea of the types of houses and prices, but again they did say it was a lovely place. Good luck.

Eltham

Hi Morag,

We visited friends in Eltham on our reccie in December and we really liked the town and surrounding area. Eltham being in the north-east of Melbourne is much cheaper than towns to the east. Eltham is though more expensive than other towns in the area. I would expect that the drive to the Beach would take about 30mins.

To check out the house and rental prices have a look at Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au

You may be interested to have a look at my website which has a huge number of links to Victorian websites. See the link below. The Education section on the Other Services page provides links re schools, so that will at least help you find out which schools are in the area.

Good luck with the house sale and your move to Aus.

Hi
We are planning to go to Melbourne too, but have no visa as yet. Our son goes to Uni this Sep and is going to come out after he's finished so similar situation to you. We hope to be able to move out end of this year, early next year depending on when we get visa and sell house, etc. Where do you live in UK? We are in Kent. There's me (46) hubby (45), Sophy (21) and Harry (18).

Hi - you will love perth, I lived there for a year in 1981 when I was only 19 years old! We have chosen the east coast though because all relatives live that side + we like it more. When are you planning on going - visa arrived yet?

Hope you get some news soon, the waiting is the worst part! We haven't put our house on the market yet but hope to within the next couple of months. Hopefully, won't take too long to sell as may not be a good time at the moment what with talk of the "credit crunch" everywhere! The info you have to supply is endless and so time consuming getting together. It will be worth it when you are on the beach!!!!
