Mornington Peninsula v Geelong - Love your opinion !
G'day Aussies, and Good evening Brits,
I've been having a good old look at Melbourne suburbs. Have seen the areas of Geelong to the West, and Mornington Peninsular to the East. Both areas look a lovely place to bring up a family, plenty of outdoor activities, beaches and parks.
I was wondering what was the deciding factor for you ? What drew you to one of these destinations, they seem similar distances to Melbourne centre. Do you have any information which you think would sway me one direction from another. Hubby will need to be in a reasonable distance from Manufacturing area, particularly automotive, but know these are dotted around both East and West.
Wish I could do a poll, to see the percentage for each destination. Would love your comments.

If we get our visa, we are hoping to go to Geelong.....our reasons being that I have family there.
Rail links to Melbourne are good (if you don't fancy driving).
We are going to Geelong in 2weeks for a couple of weeks as this is one of the areas we are looking at relocating to. We are planning to visit Mornington although only for a day. I know that doesn't help you now but I will be sure to post when we return. We have 2 boys age 4 and 1. Mind you I have to say that it was on Wanted Down Under last week I think and I didn't think much to the homes but shall reserve judgement until we have a look for ourselves.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for that. I'll keep watching your posts for your return, keen to know how you get on. I know what you mean about Geelong property on the T.V. I don't really go for the old collonial style house thing either. Was looking forward to a modern bungalow, like on "Neighbours" tee hee ! A lot of expats seem to be heading for Mornington, but we are drawn by the automotive industry on the other side of the bay. Hubby wouldn't like a 2 hour communte to work.

I know what you mean about a 2 hr commute. I have said to my husband I don't want him to commute any longer than 45 min. 2 hours each way on top of an 8 - 10 hr day means a lot of lonely time for me.
I shall bore you silly when we return. Only 13 more sleeps!!! yay!
We've lived on the Mornington Peninsula for nearly 4 years now. We've seen a lot of Australia too including Geelong and we wouldn't live anywhere else to be honest. If you don't need to be near the CBD the lifestyle down here is great. It's like living in the countryside by the sea, great beaches, plenty of room, simply paradise. Good luck with your research.
If I had to make the choice and money was no object and i didn't need to be nearer the city, Mornington would get my vote. I just think it's prettier, that's all. Geelong is, however, so close to the Great Ocean Road and all that that offers... If commuting into the city is a must, then Geelong it must be and take the VLine train... 40 Minutes and you're at Southern Cross station. Taking the train from Mornington would take forever and driving would mean you'd join the endless queues on the freeways which, between 6am and 10am are known as car parks!
Mornington peninsula v geelong (bellarine peninsula)
Hiya
We went across in November and made lots of research into the Mornington Peninsula and it seemed like the place we wanted to be. Lots of English seem to go there and at the time property seemed quite reasonable. Having visited the area we decided that it wasn't for us. We stayed in Rosebud and Mount Martha. Mount Martha is the best out of the two but was too expensive for us. Schools seemed nice and lots of english in the area. It was an hour by train from Frankston to CBD and around the same by car (but not at peak times).
In the end we went over by ferry to the other peninsula, the Bellarine, where Geelong is, and we found it a lot nicer. Not so many english but as someone else said its closer to the great ocean road, house prices are a lot cheaper and that doesn't mean you get less of an area to live in. Your money goes a lot further especially if you think of buying your own land to build your own house on. Land on Mornington peninsula seemed to be around $100,000 more for the same plot on the Bellarine peninsula. Mornington peninsula were closer to lots of retail parks and shopping centres but we preferred the quietness of the other peninsula and Geelong is only a 10 minute drive from where we are going (Drysdale, Clifton Springs). Large shopping centres and retail parks by Werribee.
At the end of the day it comes down to personal choice. If you want it busier go to the Mornington Peninsula, if you prefer it a little bit quieter but still within distance of Geelong and Melbourne, try the Bellarine Peninsula. Good value for money and very friendly.
