Help am I being stupid

Hi all,

It's been over a year now and our medicals have finally arrived in Sydney. Just lately started to panic over all the things that could harm us like snakes, spiders and now after seeing a programme about bull ants what next? I am more concerned about my 2 boys playing in the garden, I know I am being stupid but I can't be the only one! Can anyone help? I'm so confused. We are hoping to live in Berwick in Melbourne.

Thanks Sarah.

HI SARAH ...NO YOUR NOT BEING STUPID ..... CANT SAY THAT YOU WILL NEVER ENCOUNTER ALL THE NASTIES BUT ONCE YOU ARE LIVING THERE YOU PROBABLY WONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT .... WE HAVE BEEN TO OZ TWICE AND THE ONLY THING WE SEEN WAS A HUNTSMAN SPIDER WHICH MY FRIENDS DAUGHTER HAD IN A JAR . THE FIRST TIME WE WENT WAS OVER 13YRS AGO AND I WAS BITTEN BY A BULLANT[STILL HAVE MARK TO PROVE IT ] LOL BUT I HAD NO ILL EFFECTS .
I THING AS WE ALL GET NEARER TO GOING WE START TO "WOBBLE" A BIT .... I NEARLY LOST IT ON NEWS YEARS EVE WHEN WE HAD A FAMILY PARTY AND ALL I COULD THINK WAS IT COULD BE MY LAST WITH THEM !!!!. JUST KEEPING THINKING ABOUT ALL THE POSITIVE THINGS YOU WILL BE ACHEIVING BY GOING ...THAT WILL DEFINETLY OUT WEIGH ALL THE NASTIES !!!!!

Hi Mrs Keily,

Thanks for that, I do think you are right that it is just because it is getting so close now that you start to have doubts.

I agree with Mrs Keily as well. The closer you get you do get the jitters. I hate all them crawleys but i must admit after a few days of being there it does go to the back of your mind.(untill you see one)Then you start thinking of them for a few hours. But it goes away again

Hi Sarah

I know how your feeling I am a mother of 4 and I can stop thinking about all the beasts!!!

Particulary for our eldest daughter she has this ability to..... lets just say if its going to happen it happens to her...!! We were in Oz for a month a couple of years ago and she was stung by a jelly fish bitten by jack jumpers (ants) and got a pinch off a scorpion!

I guess we will just have to except that they were there first!!

We are also looking at the berwick area but dont have much infor on it have you got any you can share?

Hi Sarah..i think it is as peeps have said..it's just because your getting closer and things become more real..our kids are very precious to us so why wouldn't you worry..we took four children out to Aus and you really don't think about it from day to day..you might see a spider and it reminds you for a minute or just remind them from time to time, but you just live with it and it isn't a big hassle..all the best to you and yours..

Hi Sarah ... I dont think you are being stupid at all! ..... you are a mum and are naturally concerned for your kids welfare, and your own of course!

Can I just say I have been to Oz several times now, I have never seen a snake or a nasty spider, I am beginning to think its a PR exercise done by Ozzies to put off the weak and lily livered (sorry lapsed into pirate speak ) from moving over there!

We arent going till August, tickets all booked etc, and I get tummy ache just thinking about it too!

Hi Peppa,

My mum's cousin has lived in Berwick since the ten pound poms and they love it there. Apparently the schools are great, lots of families, about 40 mins to the beach, 45 mins to Melbourne centre and easy access to get the tram. There is lots of industry so good for jobs and the houses are reasonably priced from what I see on the realestate website. There are loads of play areas for the children too which is a bonus! A nice shopping centre near by with lots of good places to eat out too.
Hope this helps a little.

Hi Sarah
You're definitely not the only one worrying. We've not really thought about it too much until now, well that's not totally true it's always been in the back of our minds, but we also have a small child (3 year old boy). He's into everything and loves little insects/bugs/frogs. You obviously don't want to overdo it and scare them but at the same time you want to make them aware that they shouldn't touch any of these insects/bugs/creatures etc. We've told our son when he is in oz not to touch any of the bugs as some of them aren't very nice and hope to educate him more when we get there.

Eddie, my OH is a carpenter/joiner and he is not looking forward to doing things like pulling out kitchens, roofs etc, anywhere that could harbour spiders etc. but we knew this from the start and it certainly won't worry us to any great extent.

I think anybody who says they haven't thought about this or worried about this is probably lying.

Tina and Eddie
