Me too!!
We live in Strathmore, near Napier Street which has great shops I love Scully's which is an IGA (independant grocer) a bit like a Spar crossed with Waitrose, fantastic fruit and veg and a good range of other staples
We will probably not buy here as it can be expensive but we will be looking at surrounding suburbs, I quite like Oak Park, Pascoe Vale and Ascot Vale, I have mixed feelings about Taylors Lakes and Melton. My sister lives in Essendon and Keilor Road is great for shopping too!!
Great access to City on road or public transport and less traffic than the Southern suburbs
I think you have to do your reccie, make notes and then try to go back to the ones you think you like. 2 years ago We liked the look of Hopper Crossing and Laverton and we liked the fact that a new road is going in and there was a lot of building going on. Thought it might be an area to buy that would increase in value, not so sure now.
Now living here and driving down that way for work, not so impressed, very busy traffic (not sure if the road is in yet???) the estates are too 'stepford' for my liking and the area is very flat, not many trees. Probably quite easy to get to the city but I think there is a bottle neck over the bridge?? The Western ring road can get very busy.
If you can, and I can understand how difficult this can be if you have children, I would recommend renting somewhere in the middle of where you think you want to be and take your time driving around areas to get a proper feel. A reccie visit is useful but you will not get a proper feel for the area unless you visit several times.
BTW we have been as far as Ferntree Gully which we really liked, down to Frankston, Mornington, Geelong, we really liked all of these BUT they are too far from where my Sis lives and I did not move all the way here to be an hour or more away from my nearest and dearest!!!
good luck with your visit and your move
Karen

Escape to Eynesbury
Take a look at the link above.......i live in west melton and am building at eynesbury....Championship golf course, planned town centre, schools, equestrian centre and not to mention brand new harness racing track 10mins away...Recycled water and fibre optic broadband in place..lots going from 122k for 600m2+,wont get that in point cook or any other town. Property in this area in the next few years will boom. oh I forgot, the new Deer Park bypass in now open and cut travel time to the city by 20 mins.....
Don't listen to people slagging off Melton and surrounding area ...My advise is " if you have'nt been there, be QUIET!!!

We have just bought and built in Kurunjang which is just outside Melton. I would agree that Melton South is a bit suspect, but I think you can find places like this abutting lovely places everywhere in Australia and the UK too.
We moved from Point Cook where we rented for 16 months. Whilst Point Cook is very nice it is very expensive for a postage stamp size block of land. We wanted a block where we could have a reasonable amount of garden instead of having no choice but to build a double storey house and the house completely fills the land with no garden. The block we bought was a whole lot cheaper and bigger than anything we could afford in Point Cook.
We have found that Kurunjang/Melton is more like being out in the country compared to Point Cook, more like how we imagined Australia to be. There are lots of fields and hills all around us. Where we are has the feeling of country whilst being close to all amenities and easy access to the freeway. All the people here are, we have found, more friendly than when we lived in Point Cook. Obviously this is only our impression of the place. We are very happy with where we have chosen to live.
I think you should visit places for yourself before you make such a big decision.
Good luck!

Every area has its good and bad points. I was over shopping in Mount Eliza yesterday and noticed the graffiti on new offices there. We have trouble with the young ones on the Peninsula and its no different anywhere else. Its a sign of the times. We catch up eventually with what is happening overseas unfortunately.
Geelong Grammar is a prestigious school with fees to suit. Prince Charles did a term at their timber top campus years ago. It also has campuses in Melbourne.
Personally I like to live in an ordinary area with a cross section of ages and types of people as it makes it more interesting. Do not give me lawns that look like they have been measured with a ruler, prestine property that looks like noone lives there and if they do they propably keep tabs on what everyone else is doing.

Melton is nice the west side the south is older and you will get some rundown looking houses but plenty of nice new estates coming up there, an expansion on their already large shopping centre and all of the amenities close by, plus it will continue to boom over the next decade.

Although I don't like Melton, someone put a post on the forum about building in Eynesbury a bit further out from there, and it looked okay. Not sure of the link, but they are building a 'town centre' and new estates out there. The eastern suburbs of Melbourne are good, the closer to the city the more expensive, but depends on what you want once again - outer areas like Eltham, Warrandtye/Doncaster/Templestowe/Blackburn/Ringwood etc are good, and there are good schools there.
My children's dad boarded at Geelong College and loved it (apart from a bit of cement dust through the windows during the day he said - on his bed at night.... eek ! ).

Land at Eynesbury has gone up almost 40k in the last 6 months however you still can buy a block for less than 140k...my advise is to take a drive and check it out...property here will rocket in the next 5-6 yrs...great investment for sure....visit Eynesbury and you will consider building here...

Eynesbury was nice in itself but scared me a little, it's in the midst of a grey bush forest with only one exit point, if they fix the roads going in and out and made other exit points for safety then i'd consider buying.
