Hi there........

I'm the same. Can't bear them.....even watching them on TV makes me feel sick. Even writing about them makes me feel a bit weird.........

Anyway, I have been to Australia - Melbourne - many times and have rarely seen a snake. If you're living in the country then yes you will see them. If you're in the city then you should be ok.

Hope that helps!

I've not been here that long but it seems similar to snakes in the mediterranean. You rarely/never see them in the towns but if you go wandering into the bush or countryside then you may see one. Same applies to resorts in Spain or Turkey or wherever in Europe. It's not something you think about when you book your two-week holiday with Easyjet to the Med and I feel the same is true in Australia.

In Australia I don't let the kids run through long grass in the local park (which borders farmland) or through the sand dunes, and equaly, I wouldn't let them run around the Roman ruins in Greece or bush land next to remote beaches in Spain for the same reason.

Hope this is reassuring :)

Can i just reassure everyone that snakes are not common in suburban areas , i have lived in Melbourne for over 40 years and i have seen 2 snakes in that time and one of those was dead! Just be sensible and dont go into long grass without shoes and you should be ok and never try to pick one up as most aussie snakes are venomous -they are more scared of you than you are of them!!!

If you are going to live in suburbia then you really wont have a worry in the world. If you are planning to live out in the bush then yes, you are more likely to see them. I've been here 29 years nearly and seen only half a dozen in that time - all were out in the bush, miles from anywhere except for one which was roadkill beside the Hume. You'e more likely to get dive bombed by magpies than see a snake!

Hi Kelly

I have been in Melbourne 2 years and NEVER seen a snake, I also lived 1 year by the Werribee river and still NEVER saw a snake. BUT seen loads of RED Back Spiders which you have to be very wary, knock your shoes before putting them on, but apart from that we made the best choice in moving here. The weather today has been 30c but had a thunderstorm and it is still hot now at 9.00pm. Well Good luck if you need any other info just email us

regards
