Mmmm, got all excited when I read the 20 something title then read a little bit more and started to feel old LOL.

I'm 29 and been a regular poster on here for a while now. I am in Mornington (south of Melbourne) but in a slightly different situation to you - I'm here with hubby (Oh God I do sound old now).

I can't give too much info on night life and stuff in Melbourne but the shopping is pretty good! You really will love it here!

Hey Becky,

I'm living in Melbourne and have just turned 21. I moved here from Tamworth, nr Birmingham, with my family in July 2005 when I was 18 and I LOVE it here.
:)
I must admit tho, it was v. hard at first and thinking back to the first week I was here, all I wanted to do was jump back on the plane and go home!! I missed the rest of my family and friends, but once you start work / study you get to meet some great people!!!

The bars / nightlife is pretty good over here - it is a different atmosphere over here tho, much more laid back and you don't get every guy in every bar trying to grope you like the ones in England!!!

If there is anything you wanna know, or fancy a chat, let me know

Tash

Life in Melbourne

I am of a different generation

So can only make general comments

Getting around
Melbourne is a big city very easy to get around
Central Melbourne you never more than a block away from a tram line
There is also the city loop train and even a free tourist tram that loops
The city.

Eating out
Whatever food you like you can find it in central Melbourne.
From Little Collins street.
One block north is the china town with Chinese and Thai, Greek, restaurants

Two blocks south on the southbank there are plenty of good restaurants serving western food.:)
The restaurants this side of the river are a little more expensive.
There is also a casino with cinema and restaurants cafa.
even a cake resuraunt

Night life
There is a University to the north of the city
This is always a good sign.

Have been told that South Yarra is a good place for Nightlife.
Approx. 15 min by train from central Melbourne.

St Kilda was also recommended to me
Approx. 20 min by tram from central Melbourne.

Not to the same standard as London or Sydney
But then not as expensive.

Just to add something about the nightlife i would recommend Brunswick St Fitzroy and the city itself has a huge selection of Bars to choose from rather than going to South Yarra which is quite full of wannabees and not that exciting.

Sounds like somebody needs to sort out a under 30's pub crawl in Melbourne for Poms in Oz - I don't count coz I'm 35... and that's way too old in the eyes of a 21 year old (I still think I could drink them under the table though!)

Have a look at Prahan - they have a few bars and clubs down there - not been, too old for dancing and trying to pull (married away.... so that's always a stumbling block!)

connaust is an unknown quantity at this point
Being well over 20.....but still remember going out (alot) in inner city Melbourne i.e. clubs and live music, I would strongly suggest you need to see the EG section of Friday Age newspaper, the bible with gig listings, bars, clubs etc., plus the free rags found at clubs, bars, cafes and music shops.

Hi Becky,

Great idea to have a post for 20-somethings!! Im 24 and my husband is 29, we are moving to Melbourne in the beginning of next year sometime (we are still going through the stressful visa process uuuh!). Would be great to keep in contact and meet up down under.
