Looking for advice please on which area of Melbourne to move to. Looking for home near schools, shopping etc but within quick commute to Melbourne for working (driving and public transport). Ideally new build or reasonably new within estate so plenty of familys with kids.
Most new build areas will be 20+ miles from the city. I think that Point Cook would be the closest but I went out there a few weeks ago and frankly it lacked character. You might be better going down the south east Frankston/Mornington

Maz send me your e-mail address as i have a where to live in Melbourne guide
We stayed for two weeks in Sanctuary Lakes / Point Cook but bailed out and moved to Geelong. It's further to commute to Melbourne but there is a good intercity train service (V/Line) with good seating and it only stops a couple of times into Melbourne. Being out in Geelong you don't have to use Connex trains. Connex are the Melbourne suburban trains and they're an overcrowded nightmare and commuter body odour on a hot day is just....
We live on the Melbourne side of Geelong in a country town called Lara and for city life we tend to go into Geelong. It's has a great waterfront, and easy access out to the surf beaches - great for the kids.
We have just returned from a scouting trip and also found Point Cook and surrounding areas bland.
We eventually came across a lovely village called Berwick which is in the the South East suburbs about 45 kilometers from Melbourne. There is a train that goes to the city and apparantly the journey is around an hour. There are still some pockets of land nearby if you want a new build but also plenty of nearly new houses, and you get alot for your money!!
My boyfriend and I have both been lucky enough to be offered employment in Melbourne CBD and will be moving there from the UK in May this year. We are really struggling to find a place that is right for us to live. We would like to live in either a coastal area by the beach or in a more rural area with some land. We particularly liked Geelong, and Berwick but both seemed to much of a commute to the CBD, ideally we would like a 30min or less commute. We also liked St Kilda but the houses seemed v.close together with very little garden. Is there anywhere you might recommend?
Everywhere within 30 minutes of the CBD is likely to be fairly high density. I am in Bentleigh where it's not quite as bad but the train is just over 30 minutes and property prices are fairly high. What's your budget?
Thanks guys for your comments. Have just booked our honeymoon to Melbourne in September and hoping to hire a car so will be driving about and having a look.
Ally - thanks for the offer of Melbourne book but i already have it which has great info but obviously can't tell from it what the area actually look like but will take the melbourne book with us on honeymoon.

Hi, this really depends on your budget and how much land you would want, whether you mind living very close to people or want to be by the sea! Anywhere within a 20min drive of the CBD is quite closely packed in and unless you have a shed load of money you won't get a place with a sea view and near the city and have a garden bigger than a postage stamp! When you are visiting it would be worth getting a Melways or UBD which is the same as the A-Z as this gives you the details about the train lines, tram lines, and when you look at places on Real Estate.com you know where they are and can get a bit of an idea how closely packed in the houses are. There are new estates around, Sanctuary Lakes has been mentioned and there is Craigieburn, Caroline Springs, Doreen, Murnda etc... but the other option is to buy land and have a house built which is more common here in Melbourne than in the UK. It all depends on your budget!
