My husband has just accepted a job in west melbourne and looking into nice areas to live with hopefully english friends to say hi to.
lots of people seem to say Mount Martha, mornington but these seem to be 1hr 20 to 1hr 30 mins into west melbourne to go to work each day.
Any ideas? We both like to live near to a city but not in the middle of a city.
Were we live in newcastle we are 10 mins from town but have nice fields and woods close by our house to take our 2 dogs walking, is there any place like that in melbourne?
We are looking to maybe rent for 6 months untill we get settled and then look to buy. Our house here in england is 4 bedroom detached new build and is around £225,000 and we would be looking to match that price in Australian dollars so im not to sure what that would be or what we could afford over in victoria somewhere nice and friendly and hopefully 4 bedrooms also?? Any ideas or recommendatons would be great so we can have a look on the real estate web pages for somewhere we know is affordable, close enough to commute to work and nice place to live?
Hi gparkes, i know what youmean like to be close but not on top of it, everyone seems to be going to mornington peninsula which looks ok but abit crowded for us, i have been looking near bacchus marsh which is semi rural and sunbury both are about 30 35 mins away from cbd hope this is of some help and good luck in your search.
Helen aka the terry's.
(ps my nan and grandad came from newcastle-under-lyme, nice place).

Maybe try Geelong or Lara. We live in Lara which is a town in the country. There is a V/Line train service direct to Melbourne which means you get a seat and avoid the suburban crush on the Connex line.
Sunbury is also okay as is the smaller Bacchus Marsh. Give Melton and Werribee a miss
More affordable would be looking further along the Werribee line e.g. Altona (where I shall be looking next year...)
Cheers Andrew

We are also hoping to move to Melbourne last year and have found some GORGEOUS houses in Sanctuary Lakes (even sounds lovely!). Go into realestate.com.au, click on Victoria on the map,go into "click to search by map", click on Melbourne, click on South West, then scroll down in box to Sanctuary Lakes.
The equivalent of your house price here should be $540,000, there are loads of houses in that price range. The houses are all in a private complex surrounding a golf course and a lake. You can go into Sanctuary Lakes website in google and read all about the complex. The houses are all modern and contempary and would think walking round the lake would be perfect for your dogs.
Think they are also building similar complexes in Point Cook which is next to Sanctuary Lakes. The website says it is only about 15 mins drive to Melbourne which sounds ideal.
Hope this is of some help and you can let me know what you think once you've seen them.
All the best
Maz

Hi Doug
Please tell me why you don't recommend Werribee is it a bad area?If yes what is 'bad' about it?

Hi, Initially I liked Werribee, especially Werribee south side (as opposed to Werribee South which is the beach area). It seemed to have everything - a nice town with good facilities, shops, sports and schools but the longer we spent there over the two weeks, we began to see that it had a rough undercurrant. We've got young kids and although the town has got a lot going for it, it just didn't feel good. Coming form a nice soft and safe environment (Christchurch NZ) we found Werribee a little harsh with excessive drug, crime and social issues.
I read only recently that a new scout group was formed in Werribee, they spent a load of time fundraising to buy camping equipment for their very first camp. It was all stolen from the scout hut and they are left with nothing. My son has just joined the local scouts as a young Joey scout (for 6 year olds) so this story was particularly moving for me. Sadly crime is common everywhere but Werribee has more than it's fair share and I don't want to live in the environment where crime and social issues are so prevalent.
