Melbourne Suburbs

Hello all

We've been living in Perth since April 2011, but will soon be moving to Melbourne.

Hubby will be working in Collingwood and we're looking for a family friendly suburb with good schools (not private - we can't afford that with 4 kids ).

One of of the high schools that has caught my eye is Strathmore - does anyone have any thoughts on the school? Also, is Pascoe Vale in the catchment area and what is it like as a suburb?

Otherwise, please let me have your thoughts on other suburbs/schools.

Thanks in advance

Justine

Strathmore has a strong reputation. People move there for the zone. You are zoned for the closest school and Pascoe vale is unlikely to have strathmore closest. There is a website called Melbourne school zones which has the maps. You simply use the filters to select primary or secondary. Strathmore would be strictly zoned. If you are looking out that way Keilor downs secondary has very good results at vce too. If he is working in Collingwood you can also explore areas on the eastern freeway corridor as it ends at Collingwood.

Just correcting myself - looking at the map, most of Pascoe Vale is in the school zone. Pascoe Vale South is probably nicer, but more fashionable and popular so also more expensive. When you look at the map you will see a fair chunk of Coburg too - but it can be pricey. They are all established areas - many houses in Coburg/ Pascoe Vale South are 80 plus years old. There are also plenty of knock down/ rebuilds as well.

Melbourne is over 100km wide. Perhaps you could tell people what's important to you in terms of location, what you want good access to, whether you are buying or renting and approx budget. Melbourne is bigger than greater London so you will appreciate there is a wide range of prices, house styles, access to beach, city or country feel etc. Collingwood is central so that is only a small factor. Presumably you are after a family house and access to good schools and transport but what else?

Sorry, we will be renting. Would prefer to be paying under $600 per week on a house with a minimum of 4 bedrooms (2 adults, 4 kids). We definitely want access to good schools and transport - in terms of location itself, I think we're probably thinking of max 30-40 minute commute for hubby into Collingwood.

Thanks

Commute how - does he need his car for work or could he take public transport?

We're in Watsonia. Approx $2kpcm for an older weatherboard 4 bed house, 2 family rooms, 3 bathrooms, large gardens, double garage and outbuildings. Hurstbridge train line; 45 mins by train to the city, about 25mins to Collingwood. All the usual local amenities nearby. Also large shopping centres aplenty within a 5 or 10 minute drive. Close to the ringroad, close to the Kinglake hills for drive out to the countryside. We love the area.

What are the primary and high schools in the area please? Do they have good reputations and what are the results like?

Thanks
