Bendigo???

Hi all.

Can anybody out there give any views/opinions good or bad on Bendigo as a place to live, amenities schooling etc.

From what I have reseached so far seems ok, but any one with first hand experience of the City would be great.

Many thanks.:)

Hi....we live 30 min South of Bendigo in Castlemaine. Bendigo is our main shopping destination! It is one of the original old mining towns, takes 2 hours to melbourne on the train. Some really beautiful parts to the town and surrounded by Goldfields countryside, wonderful. Property prices are very good, amazing compared to Melbourne - you have heaps of choice between lifestyle properties on acreage just outside town and lots of new-build or renovated places in town. Building your own is v popular. Don't know your age group...but social life-wise: sport is huge - lots of facilities, outdoor and indoor - footy club well supported and they actually have a Rugby club! Pubs and clubs are everywhere, all different kinds of music and tastes. Some very good restaurants. Also some great Vineyards that regularly win awards. Some schools I have heard v good things about, particularly at secondary level. Heaps of little country mining towns surrounding so there is a lot of good food, especially organic, farmers markets, lots of 'arty' type stuff going on. the updated highway should also cut about 15 min off the current 2 hr drive to melbourne by 2009. Only thing i can't tell you about is employment - my OH commutes to Melbourne from castlemaine. But it is very much an expanding town, new businesses seem to be appearing all the time, there's a big hospital, they are building a huge new HQ for Bendigo Bank so i think there's a fair amount around!
You will find it a slower pace than melbourne.........but then i found melbourne so slow and small (even though lovely) after London..........it's definitely a fantastic area to have a family. our kids are having a real "aussie' childhood here!
Hope that helps a bit. happy to try to answer any questions you have! Emma

This is my opinion of Bendigo. It's a great place to bring up kids and there's lots to do, even for us bigger kids. I agree with everything Emmalouise has said. However, like everywhere it seems these days, there are problems and one does not generally get to hear about them during one's research.

For example, the local government running Australia's most progressive city have an admirable Skilled Migration Scheme...

Quote:
The Bendigo Skilled Migration Program has been in operation since February 2005; and aims to attract and retain new migrants to the City, in order to help address regional Victoria’s skilled labour shortage.
The several staff employed directly by the local government will tell you that there is very little incentive to stay, or at least they would but they've all left. [last sentence removed for fear of receiving a negative impact on our PR application]

Quote:
The project is consistent with the aims and objectives of the Council Plan and also links in with the Bendigo 25+ Community Plan’s longer term objective of increasing the City’s multiculturalism.
Secondly, Bendigo is institutionally racist. In truth this is mostly directed at the Aboriginal population but the people here are very Anglo-Saxon. I cannot accurately substantiate these remarks and they are largely based on what others have told me but if it helps in any way, I have only ever seen one Aboriginal and one black family in my 12 months here. You might look at early settlers who were typically white, middle-class, European Protestants and Presbyterian. They even sell a cheese here called Coon, I mean, what more evidence do you need?

Further evidence for the Anglo-Saxon or WASP label might be the fact that Bendigo is not a particularly transient place, based on several families that have not dispersed and remain influential in local government and business. The fact that Bendigo has also been referred to as 'cliquey' might be related.

I also have an inside ear on the levels of child abuse, rising gun crime and the knife culture in the area. It's not huge but it's a growing problem.

Apologies for the somewhat negative slant on life in Bendigo but as you asked for views and opinions. I will say that it's a very good place to bring up a family and what I have mentioned is very true of practically any town or city. I remember moving to Dawlish in Devon and thinking 'what a nice quiet little seaside town'. Dawlish has a disproportionately large drug problem that the tourist office failed to mention. Please don't let me put you off Bendigo as the good vastly outweighs the bad.

We chose Bendigo for a number of reasons and included the fact that skiing is only 3 hours drive and Melbourne (beaches, shopping and nightlife) 90 minutes or so. You can also walk ten minutes and you're in the bush

Thanks for the replys...food for thought on both counts. My wife is a nurse so good news regarding the large hospital in town. I will be making a visit over next May to see the place at first hand and then take things from there.
Any other opinions would be great.

Once again, cheers.

Hi Cityboy ....
First up, good luck with your move to Australia, hope it all goes well

I lived previously in central melbourne for 3 years and am about to return for good because I just love it as a city. I visited Bendigo a few times and enjoyed my visits however obviously can't comment on what its like to actually live there.

From your name 'cityboy' though I wonder if you might be someone who prefers city living? In which case you may find melbourne more suitable, from dried graze's comments living in bendigo is going to be more slower paced.

As with everything in life it depends on what type of person you are, what you enjoy doing, whether you prefer a fast or slow pace of life, whether you are outdoorsy or city dweller and whether you prefer a multi-cultural environment or aren't too fussed.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Could concur with Dried Graze, am from similar place, Yarrawonga, when I visited Bendigo last year via La Trobe University they cited problem of job placements for Asian Students.....very very "Skip" i.e. Anglo Celtic Australians....

OI! Anglo-Saxon not Anglo-Celtic. I'm Welsh and very proud of my Celtic heritage, especially the bit about not being English (see rugby history for explanation).

I was looking at a farm north of Bendigo (Cohuna)
Dirt cheap but miles away from anything.
Depends what you want out of Oz - I'm not bothered for the coast as I've never lived near it so I won't miss it.
