      Hi Maz

Have you tried any of the property websites?

A really good one we use is www.realestate.com. You can ask it to search for any area within Australia and it gives you a good idea of the types of houses available and guide prices.

We will probably rent when we get there and hopefully buy after 6/12 months. It does also show properties available to rent.

      Good luck - Joanne

Hi Maz and John, we are going next month and are looking around Mornington, Mt Eliza or Mt Martha. Yes you can certainly get a good sized property for that amount but it will possibly be on one of the new estates. There is a main highway and usually properties for that amount are on the other side of the highway (not nearest the beach), but easily within a short drive. You will, however, have to bear in mind the cost of stamp duty and solicitors fees to add on, plus surveys and pest reports. The stamp duty in particular could be very high. Alternatively, if you buy before the house is built, you will only pay stamp duty on the house (not the land) so it makes it cheaper. You can also get a discount if it is your first home in Australia and you will be permanent residents. Joanne has given you realestate.com which gives you a load of estate agents details in that area, there is also myhome.com.au and local estate agents such as barryplant.com.au. Good luck,

      Hiya
      For houses theres also www.domain.com.au
I think the further away from the beaches etc., the cheaper the houses.
Also, if you are on a Permanent residency visa, you will also get the Oz equivalent of child benefit and some help with rent if your on a low income. Check out Family assistance in Australia.
When we started this visa malarkey two years ago the houses were dirt cheap, and have gone up quite abit, now we will have to borrow much much more to get what we need.... but hey, its well worth it!!!
Were heading Mornington way aswell, but we have just gotta be near those lovely beaches !!!!!!!!!!
Finally living in Mount Martha, Melbourne......... and loving it !!!!!!!!!
TRA passed - Feb. 07 ...........Visa granted (136- General Plumber) 14th June !!!!!!!! Landed in Oz 9th December 2007!!!
