I was was born and bred in Melbourne and lived there for 30 years until moving to the UK with my English wife in 2004. We are moving back to Melbourne in January 2008, and are in the middle applying for a spouse visa for her, so are going through the same process as many people that contribute to this web site. So I thought I would offer my advice to anyone that would like to ask any questions about my home city of Melbourne, or Victoria in general.
Hi there, my wife and I are moving out to Melbourne probably in the middle of November. We are both nurses and have jobs at the Alfred. Wondering if you could suggest nice areas to live in...we have no kids so schools etc not an issue...dont want to live in a flat looking for a house. Also (sorry!!) could you possibly mention a couple of towns and travel times by car to the cbd....cheers, much appreciated, Norry.

Hi, working in Prahran you are reasonably close to the city and some of the really nice inner suburbs. Depending on your budget, look around south Melbourne, St. Kilda, Aouth yarra, albert park, middle park, Caulfield. Further away (maybe half an hour via tram) would be richmond, burnley, collingwood. west is port melbourne, ans north of the city is north melbourne, flemington, newmarket.
have a look at domain.com.au or realestate.com.au
for money matters take a look at moneymanager.com.au
As for travel times to the CBD via car from the Alfred, you are looking at 10 minutes. The other areas Ive mentioned are no more than 30 minutes. (possibly a little longer in traffic) I would recommend using the trams in instead.

So, by all means fire the questions at me!!
Hello uktrav,
It is very nice of you to offer to answer our questions, so I though that I would offer something back - it might be interesting for you, it might not.
I am a Brit living in Holland who is hoping to move to Melbourne early next year. As a result of 2 years investigation I have created a website for people living in or moving to Victoria. It started out as a site for people migrating, but it has now evolved in to site with more than 700 quality links to websites about Victoria.
I thought that you might be interested to have a look. I also produce a fortnightly newsletter with tips, day out ideas, snow reports etc., from the website. The site is called Victoria StartPage - you can click on the link below to see it.
Hi Uktrav
We can't wait to get to Melbourne (if we ever get our unicorn - that magical beast otherwise known as a permanent visa!!).
My OH has an employer nomination and will be working in West Melbourne - Brooklyn to be precise but we don't want to live in the heart of Melbourne and are looking for places on the suburbs. Can you recommend any areas with good high schools and colleges as we have a 13 & 17 year old to cater for. I understand the activities and social scene is excellent for this age group so don't want to be too far away so that it's a pain for the kids to get anywhere.
We have relatives in Hoppers Crossing which is lovely but have also been told that Altona Meadows or Point Cook is also a good choice. They all look great on the real estate websites but that doesn't say a great deal about the actual area. Any pointers would be fantastic.
Thanks
