Sandringham area
Hi Trace,
I've just moved from Brighton which is near Sandringham. It's pretty nice as it is by the sea. The train goes out that way but not the tram. It would be about 20-25 mins by train to the CBD. You would have the choice of using the main road along the beach or the Nepean highway. The Nepean will get you to the CBD between 30-45mins in rush hour.
The shops are clustered around the station and there is a small but decent selection of shops (large Coles supermarket, DVD rental shop, a range of restaurants, cafes and take aways). There is a mall nearby just off the Nepean. For cinemas you could go to the mall or to the neighbouring towns of Hampton and Brighton.
Hampton and Sandringham are pretty popular with families with younger children. I have to admit my husband and I regretted choosing Brighton. It has some nice trendy cafes and restaurants but a little too quiet for us. Hampton is probably the livelier of the three areas in terms of family atmosphere.
If you are looking for a slightly younger hipper atmosphere maybe check out Elwood or Prahran which is by the sea but closer to the city.
Anyway I hope this makes sense! (and helps)
Good luck!
Carol
