Decisions, decisions

Hi guys,
We need help in deciding on Perth or Melbourne. I'm more inclined to Perth due to weather and all the great things I hear about it, hubby is thinking Melbourne cheaper housing and has a friend out there, son who is 8 doesn't want anywhere to hot!
Any advice would be a great help. "Have only just started the process so have heaps of time to decide"

Hi Ange

Same dilema as you, when we began this journey we were adamant it was perth and no where else. But after research, and viewing the BritVics web site We've now shifted our thoughts to melbourne,

They both have their big pros and cons:

I'd say - if weather is one of your big thoughts to go with Melbourne - it is far more temperate (I believe it's the only part of mainland Oz in the temperate zone, like UK) but it still gets really hot throughout summer so you have the excellent weather which is probably part of the reason for going!! but distinct seasons too.

The further north you go the more humid it gets too (though not sure if Perth is really affected by that - know Brissy is)

It's so hard to decide as we have never been to Oz before, the houses seem alot more exspensive in Perth and I am a bit worried about the weather being to hot. Then again I have just been reading about the drug problems in Melbourne and that frightens me. How far along are you with your application?

Hi Ange

I have: submitted skills assessment 20/4/07
submitted State Sponsorship for Victoria 11/05/07

Awaiting a decision from both, I read the book "Where to live in Melbourne" it gives it to you straight, there is one suburb to avaoid because it has a "red light" area and needles can be found on the beach, but i think everywhere will have it's dodgy areas.

Victoria appeared to meet our needs slightly better than perth ( as we have a 10 year old daughter), but there really wasn't much in it.

Hope to be out there by Xmas although hubby is trying to tighten my reigns and is aiming for march 08.

Debbie

Hi Debbie
Where is the suburb that should be avoided, can you recommend the best suburbs to live?
We have been looking at Mornington, Cranbourne and Berwick have you heard anything bad about any of them?

Hi Guys

Never been to Perth but my Aunt used to live there and my Nan and it is supposed to be lovely.

Went to Melbourne and the only place I didn't like was Frankston, we was at the train station one evening there and I have to say I did not feel safe.

My Nan lives in Mornington and my cousin lives in Pearcedale they were nice areas.

Gd luck with your choice
x
p.s. my cousins house is for sale in Melbourne

Mornington is fairly universally considered a v good area. The City suburb that Berwick and Cranbourne is in is considered fairly working class (sorry to bring class into it but that's the easiest way of clarifying!!) - it's also one of the fastest growing areas and there are a lot of new build estates in both of these - Cranbourne has a bit of crime relatively but nothing too major.

I like the idea of both of these - but OH wants the sea so probably Mornington or South Frankston!

Hi Ange

We are looking at the Werribee area,( point cook, sanctuary lankes) but very much depends on job availability.

Hi Ange,

We are going to Perth in October, we decided on Perth as we had visited before 13 years ago for 6 months when we were 23 and 22. When I was there then I thought it quite slow with everything, not as fast paced as the UK. Now we have 2 children aged 6 and 3 it seems to be the perfect place for us to bring them up.

I wouldn't want to go to Melbourne as I have read a lot of stuff about it raining all the time and the weather being really similar to the UK. We want to go somewhere a lot warmer.

We also have relatives who live in WA but are travelling the whole of OZ at the moment.

Hope all goes well with your application.

Sarah.
