I wouldn't want to go to Melbourne as I have read a lot of stuff about it raining all the time and the weather being really similar to the UK. We want to go somewhere a lot warmer.

We also have relatives who live in WA but are travelling the whole of OZ at the moment.

Hope all goes well with your application.

Hiya

I'd have to agree with Sarah... the weather plays an important part.... one of the reasons for us looking at perth in the first place was because of the sun..... i hate being stuck indoors when it's raining, and with 3 boys it's a nightmare.... so Perths weather swings it for me!

Hi Debbie
Does it really rain all the time in Melbourne? "I can't believe the weather is going to be as bad as what it is here!"

My Nan lives in Mornington and my cousin lives in Pearcedale they were nice areas.

We have been in Melbourne 23 weeks tomorow and please let me reasure you........the weather is nothing like the UK!!
We are now into late autumn so the equivelant of Nov' in UK, winter officially starts in 2 weeks time and the temperature was 23 degrees yesterday!! Its 6:15 am here right now and the outside temp' is 16.5!
My oh is a brickie and lost many days to rain in the UK, whatever time of year it was. He has lost 1 day here to rain so far but has been sent home early many times in the afternoon coz the temp' has hit 39.
Melbourne is cooler than the other states, it does, occasionally get frost and there is even a snow plain if you go inland where you can ski......BUT, the weather is nothing like the UK!!

Hi Lesley
thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! It's great to hear a weather report from someone who is actually living in Melbourne you have made my day! It does make the decision alot easier to make knowing the weather won't be like the UK!
Any other advice you have would be great especially about the suburbs.
Thanks again

Hi Ange,

We have also been in Melbourne since November and there was five months of great weather. The hottest was about 40 and the coolest so far has been 16. Perth had lots of very hot weather, regularly in the 40s for many weeks. What we found out about the weather is that in the summer it can be a bit like the winter in the UK in that you have to stay indoors where there is air con as it gets too hot to do anything! We made our decision based solely on the weather and climate as I am very fair skinned and so are the children. Applying sun tan lotion to three kids can be a real pain when you have to do it several times a day!

Having chosen Melbourne I am very happy - as for these drug problems you read about I haven't seen or heard anything, same goes for red light district - which is St Kilda, I have been to the beach a number of times and never seen anything, although that is only during the day. I worked for the police in the UK and know what crime is like there and here and as of yet - I have not felt threatened or intimidated once!

Another big decision maker for us was that there are so many events in Melbourne and when our children get older they will want to go to concerts, sporting events etc... not sure if they have that many in Perth! There is something happening virtually every weekend in the city and its not hard to get to or park, public transport is good and we all feel safe.

We were concerned about whether we had made the right decision, but now I am glad we came to Melbourne. I also think I would get a bit bored with endless sunshine... and because of the drought - its good to have rain. Melbournes water supplies may be low, but Perth is lower. The supply of water is a real issue and another one to think about.

There will obviously be pros and cons to both, but we are glad we chose Melbourne! hope this helps.

Jo

Hi Jo
Thanks for that reply it was a great help, we have defintley decided that Melbourne is the place for us. As much as we love the sunshine I think I would soon get fed up of it all year round!
Where about in Melbourne are you?

Hiya Ange
So sorry I did not respond to your post, I must have missed it somehow!!

I can see since that you have had lots of advice about Melbourne and just to let you know that we was in Melbourne about a week before Christmas and the weather was glorious, before we had arrived in Melbourne there was bush fires as it was sooo hot! By the time we got there the weather had cooled down a bit, so they had this heat wave and when we arrived it was about 35 degrees f but then we did have a couple of really cool days as well, but to be honest although everyone says Brisbane is hot we experienced alot of rain in Brisbane! Although we are probably going to head to Brisbane.
All I can tell you about Pearcedale is that it's not too far away from Frankston for shopping and the shopping in Frankston is fairly good they even have a Toys R Us there! And you can catch the train from Frankston into Melbourne CBD. Also Pearcedale was quite rural.
Although I did not like Frankson (where the railway station is) my Aunt has told me that the governement are investing alot of money into Frankston.
Gd luck

Thanks for your reply, heard a few bad things about Frankson so will be avoiding that area.
Josh who is 8 will be up made there is a toys r us, he is quite disappointed that he won't be able to take every toy he owns with him! I would like to be in walking distance to a good primary school and a few shops as I don't drive. Do like the sound of Mornington but might be to far out. Why did you choose Brisbane over Melbourne?
Would like to hear from anyone else who knows of any good areas in Melbourne.
