State Nomination - Skills Matching Visa Application
If you aren't eligible for a Skilled Independent visa and find yourself relying on a State Nomination I recommend either:
1. Awaiting the State Nomination before you apply for a 137 visa
or
2. Applying for a Skills Matching visa (no Visa Application Charge initially - for this subclass if visa the VAC is payable at the end of the application visa).
Option 2 is usually the way to go if you find yourself approaching a deadline (eg your 45th birthday) with a State Nomination not yet confirmed. We have adopted this strategy successfully for a client when we lodged a Skills Matching visa application with the Skilled Processing Centre a few days before his 45th birthday. A State Nomination came through from the WA Government a week or two later, and a permanent residency visa was granted a few months afterwards.
Best regards.
