Mozzies in Point Cook / Sanctuary Lakes

This may sound like a silly question, but isn't there going to be a big mosquito and midge problem around PC and SL areas where there is standing fresh water?

And isn't this a disincentive to live there? Just asking because we are seriously considering this area, and need to know what the situation is. However, a lot of people seem perfectly happy there.

Thanks,

Spock.

There are area's of the UK where there are plenty of mossies and midges. If we let insects control our lives humans would not be ruling the earth now.

There are plenty of repellents to scare the little fella's away. You said it yourself - alot of people seem perfectly happy there.

Hi there! We live in Sanctuary Lakes and mozzies are not a problem at all. The flies, however, that's a different subject! There aren't necessarily more or less than in the U.K., but Boy! Are they persistent!!!!

Not doubting it, but with information you can make an informed decision. So if there are more mossies in Sanctuary Lakes than Point Cook, I can choose Point Cook. If ther's nothing in it, I might make a different choice.

Hi Krista, I was just thinking the lake water might make the moz situation worse. Not really too bothered, just something that occurred to me.

Thanks,
Spock.

Sorry.. I have probably not made myself clear! Basically, there is a long main road - Point Cook Road. Driving up from the railway station, Point Cook is on the right and Sanctuary Lakes is an enclave at the top of the road on the left! There would be no difference in the wildlife at all. The lake doesn't present any problems and, thinking about it I don't think any of us have had a single mozzie bite since we have been here! This is probably due to two things.. All houses have mozzie screens and it is very windy this side because it is so flat!

If you want to know anything else about these two areas, I am an expert ! We have viewed more houses than you can shake a stick at, compared building with buying outright, visited every school, shop, estate agent etc! I could, I guess, writ a book! Just let me know if you want any more info!

All the best, Krista

Wow, an expert... where's my list...

Actually, I asked a question in another thread - do you know the current situation with broadband in the area? I've seen a post from a while ago that this wasn't yet in place. There was also some talk about wireless broadband.

Thanks for your help.

Spock.

Broadband and wireless are both available. You may find that the speeds are not what you are used to and it seems to be a bit variable (don't know why) but, on the whole, no different to U.K.

Hi Spock,

Try www.whirlpool.net.au It has covers all of the broadband issues across Oz.

How tech-friendly are you?... I don't want to dumb this down if you are tech-savvy, neither do I want to confuse you if you're not...

In Oz, because it is a really big place, and not everything is available everywhere all at once...in various places, we have bits of everything from FTTP/FTTN to Co-ax cable to ADSL to wireless to dial-up.

Point cook has neither FTTP/FTTN nor Co-ax Cable. It does however have ADSL and soon (if not already) ...wireless.... but wireless is relatively expensive.

ADSL comes in various grades here too... ADSL (Limited)... This is ADSL at up to 1500kbps.

ADSL1 Unlimited (ADSL1 up to 8000 download / 384 upload)

ADSL2/2+ (ADSL up to 24000 dowload / 1000 upload)

[There are also Business and SOHO plans available that will give you better upload rates...but generally at a lot of extra dollars]

My mate in Point Cook can get ulimited ADSL1 (at up-to 8000kbps download, 384 upload via a selection of providers.... with the actual download rate being a function of distance from the telephone exchange...but they reckon that at least 75% of customers get 4000+)

ADSL2 will get to Point Cook soon, prolly within the year.
