Just like to say Hi, we've just got r visa's

Hi there.. :)

Just got our visa's, put house up for sale and will soon be on our way to Melbourne. Not sure what area yet, hopefully by Jan 07 we hope to be 'living r dream'

Visited Oz last year, went to Perth, Cairns, Melbourne and Sydney, we all loved Melbourne, more to offer the kids - (14 & 12) hubby a sheet metal worker, so when we arrive, need to look for a few things, (house, school, job and car- just a few to name)

Really glad I found this forum, lots I need to know about Melbourne - my two enjoy a lot of activities - hockey, swimming, dance, guides, play - flute, piano, drums, especially need to know about 'air cadets' do you have them over in Melbourne, my son is desperate to know. My daughter attends 'guides' not sure if you have them over there as well, but any info would be appreciated.

Got lots more questions about schools, What time they start and finish. Waht age they start Secondary school, I believe its 13 and my daughter will still be 12 when we arrive, so does she have to go back to primary until she's 13? please help

Many Thanks

Hi Linda,

Okay...here we go...

hockey, swimming, dance, guides, play - flute, piano, drums

Yes. All of the above. Melbourne has lots of sports facilities, including swimming pools, a hockey centre, dance studios (everything from tap to ballet to modern jazz)... Guides are here too... I was president of our local Scout Group for 3 years and we have a Guide troop hall next door!)... all kinds of music and music teachers.. I have a son learning piano and a daughter learning violin. My Friend's daughters are doing clarinet and trumpet, ...and he is learning saxaphone!

Air Cadets

I assume you mean the equivalent of the UK Air Training Corps (or ATC as was when I was there)... If so, yes... look here:

http://bb.aafc.org.au/phpbb/ This should give you a start...

My daughter will start secondary school this year at age 12 (12 years and 4 months)

Everything you ever wanted to know about education in Vic (but were afarid to ask) can probably be found here...

Regards,

Fraser

 ... er.. Nope... I have just been lucky enough to knock up a few years in the lucky country, and might as well share what I have learned. 8)

There are lots of strange "Aussie-isms" that new people need to get used to... Like house sizes being descibed as being so many "squares"...

So... My house is about 24 squares... where a "square" is 10ft x 10ft (or 100 sqyure feet in floor area)...

Another useful bit of info brought to you by Poms-in-Oz.com ... 8)
