Driving in Victoria

I've just been on the VicRoads website and it seems that U.K. licence holders don't have to take ANY tests, not even a hazard perception test.. Does anyone know if this is right, please :?:

I'm under the understanding that in Vic if you on a temp visa you don't need to take any test but if you have a permanent Visa you have to sit a 'theory' type test. This test has to be passed within 3 months of arriving.
I'm not sure that this is correct so any info would be greatly appreciated.

regards,Lee

That's what I thought, but the VicRoads website suggests otherwise...

Hi Guys,

As I understand it from looking at info from other websites as long as you have a full UK driving license you don't have to sit any tests at all (you have to have had it for a certain length of time though but can't remember how long for!) - you just go and swap your license for an Australian one. That's for PR visa holders anyway, not sure on temp visas. Although you have to swap your license within three months of arriving.

This I am really pleased about cos I did not want to sit another test!!

Lisa.

Driving license

Just take your UK license into your local VicRoads office with payment and you will be given a Victoria one with no tests. You will probably need to make an appointment and they often stamp your card part of your Uk license to prevent people using it when they get speeding tickets and trying to avoid the points. Ours was sorted in Wangaratta so they didn't bother stamping our UK licenses as they don't get many immigrants up here

For your own piece of mind it is worth reading up on any differences in driving over here especially the hook turn if you are living in Melbourne. But generally it is pretty much the same as the Uk hence no need for another test. We got our licenses done quickly as they are really useful for ID but if you are on a temporary visa then there is no need to change it over if you prefer not to (you have 3 months if you are on PR).

Krista,
don't know if every where is the same but a guy from Perth told us that if you have AA/RAC cover you can transfere that to OZ and if you can get a letter from your insurance company here confirming your no claims bonus some firms over there will also honour that
Might be worth taking details with you just incase :!:
